Edit; More pics of case repair added below. Cleaning, regluing loose seams, etc.

The '73 Shobud I'm restoring/upgrading has a beautiful case. Looks almost new on the outside. But inside are some areas of wear that have turned the red material black. Where the endplates and pedals were in contact. I'm thinking the black is from aluminum oxidation rubbing off. I'm afraid that dry-cleaning might destroy the glue that holds the fabric to the case. Was thinking of scrubbing those areas with a toothbrush and some sort of cleaners. Any ideas?

Upholstery cleaner and a toothbrush may work. I would test it on a small area first however to determine how it affects the fabric.

Yea I would think a mild upholstery or carpet shampoo, just mix it week and try it might not clean that but dont think it will hurt any thing

Take it to a car wash and spray it with the high pressure wash. Laughing

I use Windex. No joke. It cleans and leaves no residue. Try a small spot first of course! On grease a little Dawn dish detergent goes a long way.

Bill
If you gonna use Windex, make sure it's the ammonia free stuff. Any ammonia residue that comes into contact with your bright aluminum, is likely to hasten corrosion, specially in a closed case.
I cleaned the case yesterday using several drops of grease-cutting dish soap and a bit of water in a mug. Applied it with an old toothbrush, not getting it too wet, patted it dry, blowdryer to finish. Came out GREAT!
After, you can still see the wear marks, but the black from the aluminum oxidation is gone!

Looks good John!

Between Windex window cleaner, Dawn dish detergent, acetone, or mineral spirits, one is bound to work. Not all at once though.

" Looks almost new on the outside"

Well,,,, not eggs ackley! Lots of loose seams, and when I got it into the sunlight, I realized it was mostly brown! Scubbed three times with brush and cleaner, wiped between each application. You wouldn't believe the schmutz that came off! Used Windex Multisurface with vinegar. Worked well. Then started gluing seams using contact cement.
