As I’m diving deeper into learning this thing, I’m curious to all of you guys and gals opinions on what could be some common beginner bad habbits. I kno there has to be a few things that set you back, something that seems easier to do when your first starting that comes back to bite you in the rear later on as you progress, I just caught myself a few minutes ago, taking off my finger picks trying to “smooth out” the sound, in my mind, it did work I must say, but I kno that isn’t right, and I should learn how to correctly control my picking to make it smooth and sound better, I immediately put them back on and began to wonder is there anything else I’m doing to make this easier now, but harder later, I do kno I’m holding the bar correctly, but I’m curious if there is anything I’m doing that is gonna slow me down later down the road, if, and that’s a big if, I ever progress on this thing

1) Trying to play too fast.
2) Uh, trying to play too fast.
3) Trying to play too fast.

There are other important ones, too, like "playing without listening carefully to the actual sound I'm making." But after 65 years of playing various instruments, I still have a hard time remembering this simple rule:

"If you can't play it slow, why do you think you can play it fast?"

Two things that I regularly have to disabuse new students of:

1) Play with your shoes ON!
2) You need to LEARN, not just play from rote.

I'm going to write this down somewhere Al. Having been very fast at 6 string, it's very hard to go back to jump street and learn at a proper speed.[/b]

Don't over use the volume pedal. I actually played the first year or two without one. As they say, less is more.

I disagree with Steve's #1. I've played in my socks for 25 years because I sort of use my toes on the pedals. I wear loose fitting sneakers, and just slip them off and on between sets. Now I'm kind of "famous" for it with our local fans. This Christmas, I even received some socks that look like cowboy boots. Makes a good story anyway.

Glenn, I have been a no shoe player for over 35 years now. I have to feel the pedals. Last year for Christmas I got the same thing, socks that look like cowboy boots for the winter and socks that look like sandals for the summer months. It's been a conversation piece for years for me.

Here's one...Don't go in for excessive bar vibrato. It is too easy to fall into the habit of vibrato at the end of every phrase, every lick, etc. I have forced myself out of that habit. I learned to stop doing that after watching a pro 6 string guitarist mention that it's not necessary, and actually overkill to use vibrato when bending the strings (6 string) on every lick.
