I have used every conceivable brand and have found that Jagwire strings, which are available here on the forum, are as good as any other brand. I use them on my Mullen U-12 and have less string breakage. You will always break strings, but I have less with the Jagwire brand.

Spriggie,
GHS makes a semiflat pure nickel that I like. It is sometimes called rollerwound. A little more quiet than roundwound, but not as dark as flat wound. I use em on resonators, nonpedal electrics, and pedal steel.
Check GHS strings web site, and juststrings.com lots of info.
