I can understand the Impedance of pickups giving differing tone However, can anyone tell Me about output of a pickup. Is it measured in volts/mili volts or such and by how much do various steel guitar pickups differ.Do six string guitar pickups differ much from those of a pedal steel?

Indeed they do vary but, pickup "sensitivity" is rarely published.
I estimate the average output, if you disqualify the attack, is about 100mv. Kinda depends at what point in time you look in the decay envelope. The attack can be much more and that's why I like my pickup to hit a tube first - more headroom than solid state.
PSG pickups put out more signal than standard guitar pickups simply due to the fact we have more strings = more pole pieces = more wire.
I've considered using an "Ebow" to excite the string to compare one pickup/PSG to another. I've never tried it though. |

Bill Lawrence knew all the parameters of a pickup. Sadly Bill [assed away and probably his vast knowledge of pickups.
The Impedance (AC Resistance)of a pick up actually varies with the frequency. It is an AC device, not a DC device. The Ohms measurement of a pickup is not really scientific and Bill Lawrence did not use that in design and building of his pickups. The DC ohms only measures the coil wire winding of the pickup. Depending on the actual magnets, how they are arranged, etc means that a pickup wound, for example, at 18K and another 18K pickup from another vendor or of different material will not sound the same. e.g. An 18K Emmons pickup and an 18K pickup built by someone else will not be the same. |
