If you go straight from guitar to power amp, the signal will be pretty weak. The preamp preamplifies the signal.
And most preamps also have the tone-shaping (EQ) section, and a reverb unit.
Standard amps (Fender, Peavey, Evans, Webb, et c.) have a preamp section before going on to the power stage). _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

thanks Lane, your knowledge is impressive. I play through a NV 112. I was reading some posts where it was mentioned about a 'separate' preamp not built into the amp. Thanks for the clarification. _________________ GFI Ultra SD-10; Nashville 112; Hilton pedal, George L Cables; Pearse bar; Live Stings;Walker seat by Billy Knowles. |

Running a preamp in front of an amp isn't needed for gain purposes, but won't hurt anything, but will distort unless you keep one or the other turned down.
People mainly run a preamp in front of an amp if they want more or different tone shaping than that built into their amp. Which makes me think they have the wrong amp.
Unless the preamp is at the guitar and the amp is back to yonder, and you want tone knobs ready at hand. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

If you want to try a different preamp for tone shaping or effects etc.. You can still use the NV112. Just plug into the backside of the amp in the power amp in jack.
That essentially bypasses the NV112 preamp section.
You still have some control over overall volume via the nv112 master volume control, but you'd have to balance that with the overall output of you preamp and the NV112 master volume to get to the rated output of the amp and avoid distortion.
I do this sometimes with a digitech rp1000.
Just as info. _________________ Kevin Raymer
