With the loss of Weldon Myrick on Monday my mind has been racing. To me this is a devastating loss since I followed him for years as a steel player. A couple of my favorite recordings Weldon played on are "Whiskey River" by Johnny Bush, "Soft Lights And Hard Country Music" and "I Cheated Me Right Out Of You" by Moe Bandy and "Right Or Wrong" by George Straight. I saw a list one time of the artists he had recorded with and played behind and it was a very long list. His personal projects are now considered timeless and a must have for any steel player. Another legend has gone home and it sure has left us mourning.

All off them. Everything he did with Connie Smith, Johnny Bush, Moe Bandy, Larry Gatlin's first album, "The Pilgrim". His "PedalMan, Man Of Steel record from 1979. The early Bill Anderson records.
He had the gift of the right lick at the right time.

Everything Weldon did was great. I don't have a specific favorite.

Although I loved all the things Weldon played on, I really like "Hot Foot" on his Pedalman album. (I believe Johnny Cox played bass on that cut.) Awesome!

If Love Was A Bottle Of Wine by Tommy Overstreet. Killer solo, which is basically the "Amazing Two Finger, Three String, One Pedal Song".

I loved everything Weldon played. One of my favorites is an old vinyl album. Steel Guitars of the Grand Ole Opry - Sonny Hal & Weldon. "Life's Railway to Heaven" is a beautiful cut.

I guess I'll Come Running was the first one where I knew it was Weldon, and his speed blew me away.

This like all of Weldon's albums are great.

That is the one for me too. Saw Area Code 615 at Fillmore in San Francisco and this song started my steel guitar journey.

For me, everything he did. But, like so many others, I do still marvel at "I'll Come Running" with Connie Smith.

"Once A Day" by Connie Smith", "Me and Paul" by Willie Nelson. I also remember a solo he did on "Farewell Party" with Gene Watson on a show that Gene was on-not the Opry, but it was a different show. Gene introduced him as "Mr Weldon Myrick" before Weldon played the solo. Weldon was playing a black Emmons on the show

I gotta' go with Johnny Cox... all of them. I loved his stuff with Johnny Duncan too. I guess the Johnny Bush, RCA albums rank near the top of my all time favorites. Weldon told me some cool stories about those sessions once.

One of my all-time favorite steel songs... "I Can't Stop Now" by Reba. A Very quick-paced song full of great runs and open-string fills. When I first heard that song, I spent days and days learning it. My jaw still drops every time it plays.

5 songs on this lp - 2 featuring Weldon's steel playing (Beautiful Dreamer and Corn Crib) and 3 with his singing voice - 2 in a trio with Jimmy Gateley and Len Miller and 1 a vocal solo of a song Weldon wrote himself.

Speaking with Weldon at a a show years ago, of course I had to compliment him on "I'll Come Running". Weldon replied. "I guess I was lucky that day, I hit it perfectly on the first take." Then he said. . . " and I've never played it that good since then."

A few years back we saw Connie Smith in concert with Ray Price. While sitting there in the audience, watching Jack Smith on steel, something occurred to me. Every steel player wanted to play with Ray Price, but just because of Weldon's performance on that one song, I'll Come Running, it would have been ten times harder to pass an audition for Connie than it would have been for Ray. Let's face it, we can all play Crazy Arms.

(Weldon's daughter gave him a metal lipstick holder because she thought it would make a good steel guitar bar. Weldon used it on "Little Rock" and the song went to #1)

Bob, interesting you mentioned, She Found The Key. One of my all time favorites of Weldon and of Lefty. The first time I heard that song I knew it was Weldon. A friend thought it was Rugg and ask. Hal never recorded with Lefty.
