Help Identify Fender PSG

Posted: 20 Nov 2002 5:24 pm
by Ron Randall
I am helping out a friend who wants sell a Fender PSG.

I have the Fender 400 manual that I downloaded from Fender. This was the only PSG manual on the website. This guitar looks like a Fender 400 in everyway except for the pickup and bridge. This guitar has a large black rectangular pickup. The manual shows a single tele type pickup mounted at an angle.
The bridge on this guitar is a simple rod, like a Stringmaster. The 400 manual shows individual "cam-action movable bridges".

Serial number is 00958.
Patent Pending
8 string
8 pedals
Blond

Yea, I know, a picture is worth...

Thanks,

Ron

Dont rely on the manual,,your guitar is identical as the 1000 2000 & 800 in regards to pickup configuration. I dont know what you saw on Fender's web site,I can only tell
you that what you have is a 400 or 800..is the frame black or alum-mag? There were a few modifications made to the bridge as well
as the roller nut assembly,,but I have no clue as to what you saw on the Fender site.

I have been there before Fenders web site.
Post the site so I can have a look. Sounds to me like an 800..but Im confused at what you describe.

Fender often makes error's like the time someone at Fender told a dealer I was DEAD.

Maybe he meant "dead wood" but here Iam.
Post the site so I can see what you are talking about.

If the eight pedals are factory, then what you have is probably a Fender 800. You didn't say how many strings were on it.The main difference in it and a 400 is the number of pedals. The straight rod for a bridge is what caused me to tune down to "D", which I still do. I also had a Fender 1000, which also had a solid bar for a bridge. But you might have a 400 that someone has added pedals on. I'm not sure if an 800 had 10 strings or not.

Thanks for quick replies.
It has a black frame.
It is an 8 string.
8 pedals. All factory.
Fretboard, nut, and tuner pan look like a Stringmaster.
Here is Fender's website for manuals and schematics and such. Click on manuals, scroll down to Fender 400.

I'll get some pictures tommorrow.

How much is he going to want for it, and what is it's condition?

You have a Fender 800. Some had roller nuts
some didnt. You more than likley have one of the final runs of the Fender pedal guitar line. They went to Sho-Bud after that and had the Sho-Bud..Fenders,,as they say........
"Made To Fenders Specifications" what does that mean?? it means Fender didnt design them
Shot Jackson did.

Fender has just purchased Gretsch, and Charvel
whats next General Motors? Big Business has
no place in a small world such as we live in.
They can get just get so big and "Boom".

It is no longer that Fender that you or I knew. Its one Giant competing against the other. We as a community are "small potatoes"
to Fender...they forgot where their roots came from. Very few of the employee's know of the man who made the name famous.

Leo? Leo who? oh yeah,,the guy who invented the Stratocaster?. They dont know their history and couldnt care less....its Money Money, Money, They sell jewelry, "T" shirts,,any thing for Money. They have no interest in the steel guitar world.

Thats why we have Carter,Franklin, Emmons, Fessenden,Zum,,,,they are the world we live in. Fender is Big business, we live in our own little world. Its better that way.A small
group of Fender Freaks carry on the Fender that used to be by keeping the old Fender alive with their books and "History"

Leo is gone, but not forgotten by those who knew him. He left a name and a legacy that will live on forever. Those at Fender will come and they will go,,but Fender will live forever. Keep that 800 and it will be worth
more to you as time goes by.

Hey Leo,,,,wait for me...

Single-neck, 8 strings, and a rod bridge with a wide pickup? That's a Fender Pedal 400...early model (made between '58 and '63).

By the serial number, the guitar would likely have been made before 1960.

Donny
This guitar is in reality a 400.Extra pedals
were optional. I had a 400 with 10 pedals,The serial # means nothing. Too many people take the serial number as the year & date,,not so. I have a ledger book showing me
most all Fender merchandise manufactured and who the dealer was that recived the merchandise. Pre CBS was a "mish mash" of manufacturing dates etc. After CBS everything was a "mish mash".

The late Forrest White gave me this ledger after he left MusicMan and asked me never to
sell it. It gives me more information that is out there in books published by Fender authors.

If you read Forrest's book,,"The Inside Story" it tells of the serial numbers and app
dates they were manufactured.

I have been flooded with e mail looking for info on "when their guitar was manufactured.
Im opening up a can of worms here. Dont go by the serial number as the "gospel".Thats
not the case.
As for your comment,,yes it was somewhere about 1960. Not 1960,,but thereabouts Image

Hey Preacher...

I always thought the 400 was an 8 string, and an 800 was the 10 string version, and the number of pedals were varied. I have what I believe to be an 800, single neck, 10 string, 6 pedals, cable operated, and no knee levers. Blonde, with the heavy black frame. Am I on track thinking this to be an 800? Thanks O Guru of Fender!!

Billy - I think you're on track. 400's & 1000's were all 8 strings, and 800's & 2000's were all 10 strings. Gene's catalog pictures show that!

Billy..Kenny,,
You are both correct..the 800 had 10 strings
and 8 pedals,,,the 400 had 8 strings and 4 pedals. Now,,I had a 400 with 8 strings and
10 pedals,,so what are you gonna do about that?? sue me? Image Im glad you're paying attention.

Billy, your guitar has been refinished. The 10 string models (the 800 and the 2000) were, from their introduction in April '64, finished in the "3-color sunburst" finish. The early 8 string models (the 400 and the 1000) were the blond finish, but they were switched over to sunburst, as well, about the same time as the 10-string models were introduced. The 400 came standard with 4 pedals, and could be ordered with up to 10. The 1000 came standard with 8 pedals, and could be had with up to 10, as well. The 800 came standard with 6 pedals, and could be had with up to 10, and I believe all of the 2000 models came with 10 pedals.

All of the 800 and 2000's came with the narrow pickups, and the 400 and 1000 went to them, as well, in '64. See my previous post in this thread...

Whew!

I am worn out from laughing.

What fun this thread is having. The thread is tweed no doubt.

I took pictures today, and am working with Lori to get them in this post.

Jody...

I put on new strings and tuned her up to A6,
just like the manual says. Plugged in an old Twin Reverb and stood back. It would not stop playing western swing. Had to un-plug it so I could go home.

Donny...

I suspected that my Fender 800 had been refinished because it looks more of a natural wood color than the famous Fender Blonde. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful guitar, and I play it once in a while in my music room.
Jody...I wonder if Leo would approve of that?
I'd bet that he would!! And I'll bet that you also approve O Guru of Tweed!! Image Image

Leo Fender would not be upset at you're re-finishing your guitar.More than likely you removed all the old finish,,,,but you cant remove the quality and "Fender Loving Care" Leo put into your guitar.Besides wherever is
as we speak,,he still get the "royalties" Image

I wanna see that baby of your's,,,where's LORI??? Im looking for her for over a week to close a thread I posted.Hey Lori if you can hear me...HELP. Image Help us all as we go off into the "sunburst" edited for an addition.

This is a great thread,,if you go to the link
Donny posted,,,you may have a chance to see
Howard without his Pants. Imageas for your comments re;refinishing,,I was never fond of the "sunburst" finish. I thought it should have been more subtle and not as definite.

No pun intended, but I did prefer the blonde finish and the al-mag frame as opposed to the
later model which had the al-mag frame with the black"matte" finish. This was done as many players had problems with "glare and refelction's" while doing TV work. I regret
having to return my original blonde and was
sold to Bob Maickel,President of the PSGA.

I wished I had that one back.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Jody Carver on 22 November 2002 at 06:59 AM.]</p></FONT>

The 800 had been refinished before I bought it. Got it from some music store/pawn shop
in Texas via Ebay. Since I am too stupid to
figure out how to post a picture here on the forum, I will email you a picture of that sweet little blonde. And I know you like blondes!! I must too since I have been married to a couple of them!! Image Image
