Functions of Emmons p/p control panel?

Post by Veli-Pekka Haanmäki »

Emmons p/p has 3 switches on its control panel:neck switch on the middle but what are the other two? One on the right has pot, volume or tone? The one on the left...?

I believe the one you say is on the right is a tone control bypass switch. I can't imagine what the 3rd one would be, unless it had coil tapped pickups, which I am not sure Emmons had.

All of the Emmons guitars I have seen have a SPST tone bypass switch on the left, a Telecaster-style three-position pickup selector switch in the middle, and a TONE pot on the right; if your guitar is not like this we would have to see photos of the under-side of the panel to identify their functions.

Thanks!

Dave: my Emmons has those same 3 switches but tone bypass doesn't work always on the right position on E9 and the tone doesn't seem to work at all... :(

All the Emmons guitars I have seen are like what Dave says. It sounds like either a custom job or someone did their own mods. If the one on the right has a pot connected to it, that is probably the tone bypass that Dave mentions is on the left. That would mean it was moved to the right of the neck selector. Some pictures would help.

The pot is on the left, changer is on the left of the picture

Is fixing this easy thing for any guitar tech, solder job? Which kind of pot I need to fix the tone knob?

Heres the selector:

It appears that the original SPST tone bypass switch has been replaces with a DPDT center-off unit, and I cannot make out from your photos how it has been wired.

In any case the center position is a tone pot bypass. If the switch only has connections in the middle and at one end it is wired to activate the tone control in ONE (probably thrown to the left) position only, the opposite position being bypass in addition to the center "off" position. If the switch is wired at the middle and also at both ends, then it depends on what else these wires are connected to.

Replacing a switch, capacitor or pot on the Emmons panel is not too difficult if you are handy with a solder pencil, the main issue being not damaging the pickup wires and not loosing the little screws that hold the plate to the guitar.

richard..my 70ish p/p has coil tap pickups. same control switches but the toggle doesn't bypass the tone knob...it just switches from fat to thin and the tone knob works either setting.

they are fantastic pickups.
stuck a meter on them quickly once and they read:

e9......22k and 13k

c6.....20k and 11k

don't know if that changes as you turn the tone knob
which was just in a random position.

I'm confused. You keep saying there are 3 switches, but I only see the 2 that are normally on an Emmons.

Thanks for your help!
Richard: I meant 2 switches and one knob, sorry

Another question: this Emmons is 1 inch lower than normal. Is it possible to make it higher? I do have problem with right leg and volume pedal fitting, not much room.Tilting the back legs doesn't help much, nor does adjusting the height of my chair...My VP is Goodrich 120, would Hilton lowprofile help :?:

Dave, if you extend the legs, you'll still need longer pedal rods/rod extensions. And, depending on how much force the player applies to the pedals, inch-long collars between pedal bar and clutch to keep front legs from collapsing under pedal pressure.
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects

Several vendors listed in the links section/vendors section sell "lift" kits. Or you can get everything you need at a good hardware store like Ace, Home Depot and Lowes. A low profile pedal will help and may solve the problem.

Some (like me) don't want to raise the back legs a whole lot because it throws off the angle of their picking hand and could cause problems picking or blocking.

Thanks again for all! I'll order the liftkit but I can't find who sells them for p/p?

Oops. Just realized you are in Finland and probably don't have any of the hardware stores I listed. And the threading is probably American sizes. You're better off buying the kit as you said.

A good hardware store should have what you need: 8 thingies (I don't remember their names, but basically a nut about an inch long), and some bits of all-thread (that's a bolt with no head, or threaded rod), about an inch long, half an inch protruding into the rod end and half into the extender thing. That will look a little odd, since the hex barrel will end up a lot longer than usual.

I would agree if the OP as looking to add more than 1 inch to the leg length, but a small extension should be easy to do and the pedals will still be functional. As a slightly taller than standard human I have done so on both Emmons and ShoBud guitars with no problems whatsoever.

The things are called spacers in the hardware stores. But he is in Finland which I believe is on the metric system. The threads on his rods are probably American.

I bet you CAN find English threads in finlandia, but they might be harder to find.
