My acoustic slide currently has strings from .013 to .056. I'd like to play around with some tunes tabbed for C6. What tuning I can use to get the relative sound without changing the strings?

Thanks,

Here's the problem: start with the second string, B... tune that up to C. First string stays where it is. Third string goes up to A. Fourth string... well, there's the problem, it needs to be G, and you've tuned the G string up to A, that would be 5 frets up.

So start again, go for A6. First string tuned down to C#. Second string tuned down to A. Third string tuned up to G#. Fourth string tuned up to E. Fifth string tuned up to C#... too much, four frets! And E string tuned up to A... no way. And with the first string so floppy, it'll sound very bad.

You're much better off to re-string it right. Get a nut extender while you're at it. You should be able to get there with a 12-string acoustic set, choose the light gauge.

E .012
C .014
A .017
G .020
E .028
C .032

... or something like that. Here's an online calculator...

Note the article with it is wrong... guitar A string is A3, not A2. Play with it and see what you get.

I would suggest that a 12 gauge top string is much to light, the string will be too spongy if not allowing your bar to hit the fretboard. Being a heavy handed player from the 40's when "light" strings were never heard of, I use a No. 16 for the top E string.
