This time there is a Dutch duo under the name Common Linnets representing The Netherlands. The duo, Ilse Delange and Waylon, are top notch singers that believe in honest music. They both work since they were young in the countrymusicscene and record in Nashville. The sing a song Calm After The Storm, with Paul Franklin all over on pedalsteel. I hope they reach the finales and maybe reach nr.1! Paul, you made the song for me!
Thumbs up for this beautiful song. The whole ceremony starts this evening and the finales are on the 10th of may. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkrF8uC92O4

This has no chance of winning, by dint of being far too good. Great song.

John, I agree with you. This song is far too good. Eurovision contest standards are usually well below this song.

Well, they go to the finales, Saturday. They came through this semi!I give them a very good chance, just because people are fed up with cheap cheesy 'songs'. This has quality. The only reason I can think of that they don't win is a political one, East-European satelite-states usualy vote for eachother.....

If they believe in honest music, what the heck are they doing getting involved in the ESC? ;-)

They remind me a little of Rodney Crowell in the nineties. I will vote for them.

Well they were just pipped into 2nd place. But it took a Drag queen with a beard singing a song like a Bond Theme to do it.

The German commentator called the music Neo- Country. Amazing that they came so far!

They did exceptionally well, and if there hadn't been a gimicky and kitch transvestite on the show, they would have won on merit.

This was a great promotion of European country music. Calm After The Storm was a far stronger song than the winning number, but we all know that the best song never wins.

I am very proud and happy for Ilse that she came that far! But very sorry that show and sexual statement wins from music. ............

It never was about the music, these shows never are. Shows like this are about attracting more viewership from other shows. The more controversial, the more people watch. The more people watch, the more we have these same types of shows.

Oh, you mean Conchita?

I have been getting a kick out of Eurovision ever since I first toured Europe in the 80's and had some French buddy explained what this astonishingly crazy music show on TV was. It was cool this year to hear a Pedalsteel player. I wonder if it was the first ?

Ken , would you be willing to express your opinion about other peoples sexual identity to Conchita or for that matter to the transgender members of the forum in person ? Remember getting your ass kicked by a dude in a dress is super embarrassing !

I imagine that some people might pay to have that done.

Getting your rear end kicked by a one legged man in a dress would be even more embarrassing.

I get the impression that you are bracketing this with Americas got talent and American idol etc.
This competition has been going on since 1956, designed to bring countries together in Europe post war.It is one of the longest running shows on TV worldwide.
168 million peaople watched that show Last Saturday, fiercly political it may be, Kitsch it may be, but even people who hate it love it. Relevance to the music business... nil. Entertainemnt value...huge.
Career wise.
Ask Celine Dion, ABBA and Julio Iglesias, Cliff Richard, Lulu and Sandie Shaw

Yes John RJ! Sandie Shaw singing "Puppet On A String" barefoot and with a full orchestra. Now they perform with backing tracks, but the candidate is still singing live. If I'm not mistaken the band fom Malta also played their instruments live, but that was the only exception.

Yuck !

Ken,
This may not be P.C., but that's enough to gag a maggot off of a gut wagon ! That comment will probably get me hauled away to a re-education camp.

Dustin I think you will meet a few steel players at the re-education camp.

Well, you can put lipstick on a pig,it's still a pig . Read into that whatever you want. I know that is "troglodyte caveman" thinking by European standards...but that's just the way I feel.

I'm getting complaints of the mean spirited track this is taking. Closed.
