I like to be able to hold the bar down and not have the strings feel spongy (too loose)
I like a solid plane to play on. So my gauges are all much larger than suggested.

Now I know some folks like to have lighter gauge plain strings to be able to pull behind the bar for pedal steel type licks.

You will probably have to experiment until you find what feels best to you. Strings are cheap... buy extras.

I'm a player from the 40's when there was no such thing as light gauges for the steel, because the old A Major and E Major tunings used heavy strings. Like Dom, I use heavier strings on all my steels. Some of these cheapie imported laps are like having a built-in tuning changer, you can vary the pitch of the strings just by playing it, the strings are so soft!!!!!!
