I have been using my ValveKing 112 to play out, and the thing does a fine job. It is small, fairly light, and sounds very good.
The only thing I wish was different about it is, the lead channel cannot be cleaned up. At least I have never been able to get it clean. So if I play six string I have to use the clean channel, which means I have to unplug the steel, and reset the eq. I don't like or want distortion on six string or steel, so that is kind of cumbersome. That is the big plus with my Vegas 400, two clean channels. I don't play much six string, so it isn't worth taking another amp.
But I do like the ValveKing.

Bill,
I don't know about the Peavey, but my Frenzel needed a lower gain tube in the preamp stage to clean it up for pedal steel. Do you have an amp tech that can advise you about tube options? Or an owner's manual for the Peavey? My owner's manual steered me in the right direction. |

I do have owners manuals for my amps, but I have not looked at altering anything tube or circuit wise yet. I have only used the on board tones and controls. The tone controls are passive I think on these amps.
If I stay with these amps I probably will look at the options you mentioned.

Because it's an inexpensive, pretty good amp, it attracts lots of modders. They're out there. Might be worth asking on the Peavey forum - the ValveKings are apparently a nontraditional design.
This constitutes evidence that people don't have enough to do. 
There is a Peavey forum and you'll get people from Peavey replying there.

I believe the Classic 50 has two independent channels and both can be cleaned up.

Find a PoD or the like for Telecaster, routing it ... somehow - maybe using an A/B switch. |

I have a 15" Altec 418b in the 100 watt with a closed back cabinet, and it sure does sound good! It's very clean and rock solid.
