Have you actually played one of these, Ron? It looks very interesting, but I think 10 watts of solid state amplifier just wouldn't cut it for most of my applications. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Further info on user-friendliness;
re outting for stage use: two options here, the headphone out to a PA or a mic in front of the amp speaker(s). Might not get enough volume at stage levels to monitor yourself if micing it though. Similarly the headphone out would cut off the internal speakers so you'd need to monitor yourself through the PA. All would depend on the size of the venue/stage you're working on.
About the sound getting less defined when cranked; it's supposed to do that. Not only is the sound of the original amp model emulated, but also the way the original amp would work. So, if you crank the THR on the clean channel, it will start to crack up just as the original tube amp would.
Plus, re the EQ doesn't really do much on some amp models; this is also a part of the whole "behave like the original amp" thing.
The software that comes with it currently requires either Windows 7 or Mac OS X 10.6. |

Probably easier to point to this review from a UK user.
$299 list price, but I still haven't seen any of these amps out in the wild. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

I tried the THR 10 today in our local music store`s amp booth.
The leaflet claims that It sound very good-even at low volume- and that`s exactly what it does: Sounds terrific AT LOW VOLUME.
The reverb (in stereo) is really huge -they offer a pleasing wide stereo spread that really fills the room but you can switch off. Phaser, Tremolo and the other FXs soud pretty good as well.
Best thing about it is that you can edit and save a lot more FX parameters through a software connected to the USB port, so you`re not stuck with Spring and Cathedral but have all options at the nose of your mouse, even the choice between different speaker cabs.
Here you`ll find a video about the editing software.
I also tried the aux in with my iPod, it serves as a decent little ghetto blaster.
My only concern is: It`s not loud.
When Yamaha claims that you can practice without disturbing the neighbors, they´re right. Volume is fine to practice at home but a livingroom session with a clean Ferderish steel sound will surely show the amp`s limits. But after all, "THR" stands for the "third amp", (after the Marshall pair'o' full stacks and the smaller club gig amp, as we all use them) for your personal use at home.
I´m REALLY TEMPTED.....
EDIT:
I took one home today (thanks to the money-back-guarantee) , hooked up the iPod and and kept noodeling all afternoon. This little amp is sooo much fun to play through.
I have to correct myself regarding my volume concerns:
It is not a large stage amp for sure, but the volume is really ok, feels like even a semi-acoustic rehearsal shouldn't be a problem with it.
It's a keeper! |

Glad to hear your review of it, Pit, even tho I've been sold on it for a while without actually having held it. It can always be miked, and the head out to a desk will allow club use. I'm wondering how these will evolve, and what the competition have in store to counter this groundbreaking tech. |

I have one. It wasn't easy to find but I found it new on eBay. It's a great amp for practicing. In fact, the best practice amp I've ever heard. It fills my studio with lush stereo chorus sound.
It sounds great with any instrument plugged into it. Extraordinary with my Gibson L5. I'll probably even use it for recording bass. It's not very loud so I wouldn't try to use it live, but that's me. I especially like the "tap tempo" and the built-in tuner.
If anybody has any questions, post them on here and I'll try to answer them the best I can. |

How would you use an external spkr. with that amp?Maybe run it out of the phones input?
I ask these questions because I'm interested in maybe getting one to not only use for practice but to also upload sounds to my computer as it has a USB port, anyone have info on that? |

Ransom,
the headphones out won't have power enough to feed an external speaker,
if you're talking about a simple passive cab.
An ACTIVE speaker with it's own amplification built in -preferrably a stereo pair- could go well with the phones jack.
If you have installed Yamaha's driver software, the THR10 (and THR5, too) will communicate with your computer as an 4-channel USB-soundcard. It sends four tracks: The amp simulation, that you hear (Input 1/2 in Stereo) as well as the dry guitar signal ( 3/4, also in Stereo). The purpose of being able to record a "dry" signal simultaneously is to have the choice of another -maybe internal software- sound during mixdown later on.
USB return is two-track, you set the volume with the USB/AUX level on the right side.
I hooked it up with my Macbook, worked right out of the box...

Thanks Pit,I have an old Yamaha spkr. cab w/2-12" spkrs. & was wondering.I have a modeling amp too,Roland 80XL but for steel it's leaves a lot to be desired & it doesn't have USB capabilities.I may get the smaller unit later on just for the purpose of using it with my computer.Just something to keep me busy & off the streets. |

If it plays out even half as good as everything I've heard, Rick, I think we'll be happy campers. I've got my fingers crossed and would be interested in hearing your steels/PUs thru it. The stereo cleans are supposedly delicious, probably moreso than our MicroCube RX's, which are pretty good. For $300 I just couldn't say no. |

Availability seems to be quite random. I was surprised to find one on Oahu AND it was at the standard $300 price, but I can't get over to Pearl to snag it, so I'm left anxiously awaiting the check to clear and get to the shipping. By that time they'll probably have the newer model out! |

FYI....At a workshop during the Maui Steel Guitar festival Alan Akaka highly recommended the THR10 as a non-stage amp.
I picked one up today at Bounty Music on Maui for $299.
Small enough ...I hope...to bring back to east coast next week
Cheers
