I am looking for some guidelines on what strings most steelers are using on their E-9 setup.

Most players use packaged sets.
Go to Scotty's Music website and take a look at the string sets he sells. Those are pretty typical gauges. There's the 'Nashville' style set that tends to be a bit lighter than the 'Tension Balanced' set -- both for E9 and C6. There are also sets for 12-string E9/B6 -- or else you can buy strings separately -- individual strings or by the dozen (that's what I prefer).

Some players prefer nickel; others prefer stainless. It is noteworthy that ONLY THE WOUND STRINGS ARE DIFFERENT -- the plain ones are the same material. There are very few mfgrs of the string wire. Many companies wind their own -- but that's just for the wound. There are also a few different alloys available, such as the Cobra Coil that Bobbe Seymour sells at Steel Guitar Nashville
