Does the new MSA Millennium have tunable splits?

Instruments, mechanical issues, copedents, techniques, etc.

Does the new MSA Millennium have tunable splits?

Post by Mike Perlowin »

I love my MSAs, but I wish the splits on them were tunable. The fact that they're not is the one feature I'm displeased about. If I were to buy a new guitar, (and I might in a year or two) I would want this feature.

Hi Mike!

E-mail Reece, but I'm sure it does. Got a pretty fancy compensator setup too. These guys really have thought of everything.

Missed you in St LOO!

Mike-A good feature. It seems like a lot of guitars don't have the tunable splits built in. Why not?, I don't know.

But the MSA Millenium has them. In fact it seems like they thought of everything......al Image
[This message was edited by Al Marcus on 22 September 2002 at 08:51 AM.]

Mike P....JB and Al are absolutely correct, and I'm appreciative of the fact they thought enough of the new MSA Millennium to look into it to find out, same as I appreciate your asking the question.

Mike- I don't think you need to buy a new guitar to get tunable splits on your guitar. I think that it is fairly easy to accomplish with a minor modification to your changer. Call me if you have any questions~ Jim

Don't you just need an extra rod and bell crank, properly adjusted?

There's a video showing how to tune them at the Carter site.

I know there's a way to tune a split using the extra hole in the changer, but I don't have any extra holes. Both my guitars have double raise/double lower changers, and my tuning requires 3 raises on some strings. I have some of Tom Bradshaw's converter's that convert a lower to a raise, so my 4th, 5th, and 6th strings all have 3 raises and 1 lower instead of 2 and 2.

My only options are to live without the tunable split, as I have been doing, or get a new guitar, which I may do in a year or two.

Mike- I'm pretty sure that you can drill out the bar between the pillow blocks (think it's all in one on the MSA) and thread it and put in some screws to set against the changer fingers in question- that should solve your problem.

Jim, I'm going to be pretty busy for the next few weeks, but when things quite down I'll give you a call. I'd like to discuss this further.
