My matchbro bar was stolen last weekend. Any advice on what else to use is appreciated. What are they made of?
Also, do you change your amp/effects settings for a "better Dobro sound?" Thanks in advance.

Scotty sells Matchbro bars by themselves, without the whole unit. You can also make a wooden bar out of a broom handle and use that, but it's not quite the same.
Something else that also gives a sort of dobro like sound is a stomp box called "The Q Zone" that's made by the Dunlop company. It's actually the same circuitry as of a cry baby wha wha pedal, but you set the tone at a specific place and leave it there instead of varying it like you would with the pedal. Again, it's not the same as a Match-bro, but it's not bad.

I sometimes experiment playing with a piece of PVC pipe to get a twanky, almost "ban@o-like" tone. You could conceivably weigh it on the inside with metal pipe or match a piece of PVC to a smaller 3/4" bar to add some sustain.

When I use my Matchbro, I turn off all effects. Including reverb, delay and chorus.
I leave my amp settings the same and adjust the Matchbro to taste.
