I was saddened to hear about the passing of a great guy and a dear friend to many country music fans for decades, Mr. Smokey Smith. I will always remember Smokey, getting me backstage at a Bill Anderson show at Hoyt Sherman auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa when I was about 10 or 11 years old. He saw this kid hanging around by the stage door after everyone else had left the hall, and asked what he could do for me. "I wanted to meet Sonny" was my reply, meaning Sonny Garrish, of course, Bill's steel player at that time. "Sure, Son", he said, "follow me"!!, and proceeded to take me back there, where I walked right past Bill Anderson, like he was a roadie, on my way to meet my hero. I will ALWAYS remember that.....and Smokey.....with his ever-present cigar. You will be missed by many, old friend. |
