Sounds like Phil may be playing that modified Peavy guitar with a changer tailpiece. (Phil used that guitar, BTW, to get that signature E-bending sound on the intro on George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today.") I saw Phil and Buddy playing together at Scotty's in around '83 or 84. Here's a clip of him playing that strange beast around the same time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZX6J0mgX4bc
Don't know, but Buddy probably helped him build it. All I remember is that it had a little 2- or 3-pedal rack with old Sho-Bud type pedals and a fairly large, coaxial style cable going from the rack to the tailpiece. It was kind of cool, but apparently never really caught on as a thing. _________________ Drew Pierce

The problem with bending strings on a guitar, is the strings that aren't bent easily go out of tune.
When Ned Steinberger came to Nashville, when Gibson bought Steinberger, pushy me somehow managed to get Ned over to Buddy's house and would have loved to tackle that problem, among others; but to no avail. At least I have the picture with these two amazing people. ;0)
Here is a picture of us at lunch that day.

what the name of this club is. If anyone knows, let us know. |
The club was operated by Steel Guitarist Bobby Menard on
Old Collinsville Road in Fairview Heights, Illinois.
Bobby supported steel guitar in his club by hiring bands that
had steel guitar as much as possible.
Wally Murphy and I played often at Bobbys, and Bobby played in
his own 'house band'. Often when Scotty would have a Nashville
or otherwise 'Star Steelplayer' in for a Sunday afternoon Steel
Guitar International meeting, Bobby would hire that steel player
to play in his night club that evening.
Often Jimmy Queen or John DiMartino on drums, myself on bass,
Bobby Caldwell on guitar and sometimes Wade Ray on fiddle
would become the steel players backup band at Bobbys after we
had backed them for the Sunday afternoon show.
I recall playing the afternoon when Buddy and Phil came up in this
time-frame, so I may be the bass on these downloads as well, I'll
hafta download & hear them.
Some of the steelplayers that played over at Bobbys following a
Sunday afternoon SGI meeting would have included Curly Chalker,
Doug Jernigan, Buddy, Little Roy Wiggins, Hank Corwin and more
that I don't recall without goin' through boxes of tapes to remind me!

Russ is correct. Club was Bobby's Good Time Country located at 6000 Old Collinsville Road in Fairview Heights Il. I saw Curly Chalker and Doug Jernigan there. Bobby Menard still owns one of Doug's old Emmons guitars. The old Bobby's is long gone
The good news is that there is a New Bobby's It is in Maryville, Il on route 159. About 15 minutes away from the original. They have live COUNTRY every FRI, SAT and SUN. I've played there 3 times and will be again. If you are in the area stop in. |
