I assume that cut is off their live album "Takin' The Stage". If so, John David Call is the steeler - according to Wikipedia, he was part of the band in the formative years, left briefly around '72, but rejoined in '73. He was around through the live album, but left again soon after.
Al "Brisco" Clark is credited with the steel on "Bustin' Out" - I just now realized that album, which was a huge favorite of mine, featured the steel playing of Al Brisco of Steel Guitars of Canada! Interesting! _________________ Bringing steel guitar to the bukid of Negros Oriental! |

Great cut. Great playing. Great tone.
The question is, though, is it an Emmons? That's my guess. And it's being played through a Twin. |

Maybe half right - I'll let the Fender guru's ID that amp behind him (assuming that's the one he is playing through). But I can correctly ID that guitar - A Sho-Bud Pro II Custom:
This was taken in '77, same year as the live album. Now, perhaps he had an Emmons, although no one mentions him with an Emmons.
Here is the thread on the forum that pic comes from, with much more info on him and the band:

I believe John is a forum member. He was at an OSGA jam a couple of years back. If memory serves me right he was playing a Sho-Bud. _________________ D.S. Rigsby |

The solo in Jazzman is one of my favorites:

Really is a superb live version of Amie, and some fine steel playing.
I don't know if I could ever get sick of that song, just love it.
I like Jazzman too, thanks Rick. _________________ Mark |

Back in 2008 while doing a week long resort show opening for Little Feat, I got to play steel on that song with Craig Fuller sitting in the front row watching. We tried to get him up to sing it, but he just sat there and smiled.... |

In the picture, with four knobs on the normal channel and no tail on the Fender logo, that's a Twin Reverb from the mid-to-late 70's.
There are actually two of 'em. Another Twin is located lower in the picture.
Ya' gotta love those teardrop knee levers. |

Love John Call's steel on that version but I have to admit I miss Craig Fuller's vocal. The original writer, Fuller had left the band by then I believe. |

I have heard I have heard a live version of "Amie" with John David Call on steel where John comes in half way through the instrumental break and finishes off the solo. Classic country rock steel. |

Forgive me if I have already posted this.
I went to see PPL in the early 70s. I'm a big fan. It was at a bar called "Your Fathers Mustache", outside of New York City. The band gets on stage, and there was NO Craig Fuller! I was bummed, and who was this new guy. Bummer. Then the new guy starts singing . WOW It was of coarse Vince Gill. It turned out that Vince could sing, and PPL was trying to hire him for a while.
On a personal note…I recorded a version of Amy with mandolins covering the guitar solo. I always thought the song was missing mandolin.
Anyway…John David Call, and Rusty Young, inspired me to get a PSG _________________ Maverick

I can't be sure about the steeler, but the lead singer is not Craig Fuller |

Great tone and touch who ever it is. That is the tone I strive for. Full yet plenty highs and mids.
Are you all sure that's not Sonny Bono on steel? _________________ Henry Matthews

That is definitely J.D. on steel on that vid. It's from the Live, Takin' the Stage LP. It has also shown up on other remake CDs later on. That's Mike Reilly on lead vocals. They are both touring with PPL this time around. It's a great show if you get to see them. Lots of music for only 4 guys. They might pack it in after this year, though, so if you're planning on seeing them, do it now.
The live version was recorded on one of John's Buds, probably with a Twin. I don't know if he ever owned an Emmons, but I can ask for ya. He's switched over to Carters for on the road (lighter). Still has some Buds, though.
I don't think he's a member here. If he is, he's keeping it a pretty good secret. _________________ Sho-Bud Pro II Custom, GFI Ultra SD-10, Fender Pro Amp, Fender Mustang II Amp, Morrell 8-string lap, Epiphone 6-string lap, Galveston reso, etc. |
