Weissenborn tuning question

Hi,

I'm new to the forum. I'm getting my first Weissenborn (from Lazy River), and I have a general question about tunings and string gauge. Can a Weissenborn handle all of the standard lap steel and dobro tunings, or should some of them be avoided? And should heavy gauge strings be avoided?

Should have done a search before posting. I'll probably stick to open D tuning starting out.
