Wanted: Beginner's/Child Lap Steel Instruction- CenTex...

Any help with getting a couple of get-started-lessons for a family 'nephew', ~ 8 yrs. old, interest in guitar/music, near Liberty Hill, TX, ~15 mi. west of Georgetown.
I sent him a 6-string lap/amp and now realize C6 tuning/tab probable not best choice. After reading past posts, etc., maybe an open E to get him started easier w/strumming/chording. I'm not a player/musician, only a novice fixer/enjoyer of steel stuff.
Also, any suggestions on child's beginning instruction packages with DVD/audio/visual aid. Here, again in one of the open major tunings. I have bunches of old '50's era tab/lessons, but nothing audio/visually aided.
