Anyone know who played steel on the Pointer Sisters version of 'Fairytale'? Also who wrote it? It's got some non standard timing for a 3 chord song. Thanks in advance, Larry

Pointer Sisters did write the song as I had learned that years ago, I just couldn't find who was playing steel. I remember that song when it first came out and obviously they didn't have a steel player with them most the times when they did it live. Most likely was for the studio version only. I really have liked that song over the years!

They seem to have a steel player here, but he doesn't really play much:

Weldon also overdubbed steel on Elvis' cut of "Fairytale" (1975) from the Elvis "Today" LP.

I never heard that version by Elvis. Quite a bit faster. Also, I have to correct myself about its being a 3 chord song-there is that 2m- V change and the 4 - 4m change. I think I like the Sisters version best, but maybe it's what I am used to hearing. What really got me back in the day was the steel intro.

I remember hearing - back in the day - that Weldon was using an Electro Harmonix Clone Theory for a chorus effect.
