I have a Pod XT pro rack mount that I use for live shows. I won't go into everything I have done to try and fix a problem it has with it breaking up when I hit the strings a little hard. I don't have any problem when I use it in the studio. I have done everything to try and fix it even having the sound man adjust some things on his end. Is it because the pod is not really a steel guitar unit to begin with? Would it help if I had a stereo steel or one of Brad Sarno's preamps? I really have tried everything to fix this and feel I can't really play to my full potential. I'm assuming I wouldn't have this problem with a preamp more suited for steel. |

Used an XT for years, then the HD version, then a Tech 21 Blonde. I finally made it to this.
It's pretty amazing. COMPLETE tonal flexibility with 30db of clean signal to drive
any power amp or powered cabinet. _________________ Straight Ahead 500 watt mini~power amp |

I'm sure the empress ParaEQ is a wonderful unit (being Canadian myself
But the other units being talked about have so much more than just parametric EQ (adjustable drive, effects, reverb, speaker simulation, etc.)
Are you saying that you are working with simply a ParaEQ between your steel and the P.A. system? Can you describe your entire signal chain?
(picky engineer speaking: saying a device has 30 dB of output to drive something is meaningless. The dB is "unitless", because it is a ratio. Is it +30 dBu (30 dB above a microvolt?) +30 dBm (30 dB above a milliwatt into 600 ohms?) Or does it offer 30 dB of gain from input to output?)
I'm asking because I'm not currently happy with my setup and I'm exploring what others are doing -- and you sound very satisfied!
BTW Dean: I have the same overload problem when I plug my steel into my Pod XT. Something about the steel pickups causes a nasty clipping sound. It helps to somehow pad the signal level down a bit first.
Cheers,

I went through a lot of amps until I bought a Sarno Classic preamp. The control layout is very straightforward, it's built extremely well, it sounds wonderful and the price is very reasonable. Mine is currently housed in a TC Furlong powered combo cab. It all depends on what you're looking for, but I've been very happy with the Sarno and Furlong amps. They're both designed with the pedal steel in mind. |

Mike,
If someone is looking for a multi-fx unit with all the emulators, simulators, modeling, etc. etc., then this is definitely not for them.
This is strictly a 30db clean gain (between input and output) preamp which also has a 3 position input pad if needed (which I never use).
Plus, if even more headroom is desired, it will run on 18V. I've been running it on 9V with no break up issues.
The signal chain is simply: steel, vol. pedal, reverb pedal, ParaEQ into my own 800 watt powered (20 lb.) 12" speaker cabinet.
Since the ParaEQ is only 3.5" X 4.5", I can stick it right in my pak-a-seat. |

I forgot to mention even though it clips, the clip light never shows or flashes when it does clip. I've cut the drive completely off and B Ave the input gain much lower than the output volume and some other things I've tried. I'm thinking I'm going to need something different for live. |

Currently using:
Revelation Pre
TC Electronic M-350 effects processor
Carvin HT400 power amp
2 cabinets with reconed JBL D-130F's
I can go direct to a board from the Rev or Carvin, but prefer a good mic on the JBL's. _________________ 1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Revelation preamp, Carbon Copy Delay and Hall Of Fame Reverb, Crown XLS 1002, 2- 15" Eminence Wheelhouse speakers, ShoBud Pedal, Effects Pedals. 1949 Epiphone D-8. |

If it says Sarno I know it is good. Never played a Telonics but never heard anything bad about their gear. Boils down to what you want to spend. Just my 2 cents worth. _________________ Keep pickin', Larry |
