Visiting the Hawaiian islands in 2014

Hi,
I would like to visit the islands in 2014.
This journey should revolve around steel guitar, hawaiian music and culture.
I still have a couple of options timewise for starting the trip.
Do you have any suggestions concerning music festivals or such in 2014. Something a steel guitar player should not miss...

I'll be on Oahu from 1/7-23, jamming and gigging, and then on Oahu and Maui all of April and the first week in May. By all means. go to the Maui festival; it is always fabulous, lots of good steelers, both pro and am. On Oahu: Tuesday night - Greg Sardinha at the Halekulani, Wednesday night - Cyril Pahinui, featuring Jeff Au Hoy on steel, Thursday evening - The Keawe Ohana at the Moana Terrace, Waikiki Marriott, with Alan Akaka on steel, first Friday - the Ko'olau Serenaders with Derrick Mau on steel at Honey's at the Ko'olau country club in Kaneohe. I hear that the Hiram Olsen trio with Casey Olsen is back at the Halekulani, but I don't know what day. I'll be playing with Ramon Camarillo at Nico's on Pier 38 Friday noons while I'm there. Steel guitar is picking up in Waikiki.

Oh - there's a Waikiki steel guitar festival in July. I haven't got a date for it yet. Last year it was at the Outrigger. Check out
this link for more information.

Mahalo for your posts!
Looks like that the Maui Festival should go to the top of my list.
But I also have to consider, all the fine players you mentioned are mostly working on the Ohau island. I probably have do some island hopping. Have no idea how complicated that is...
To the European steelers with Hawaii experience: is it possibe get an lapsteel as carry on luggage thru all the airport security into to the airplane?

I travel a lot with lap steels. If it will fit in the overhead, then, with some cajoling, you can bring it on board. My D8 Stringmaster fits, so I carry it on, but my D8 Canopus does not. - Jack

Fantastic, a double neck Stringmaster as carry on. I have a single neck SM. Do they allow to have the legs in the case? I would be extremly nice to have a console available. I thought of a lap steel with softcase on my back.
It's probably something else on international flights. They may take the steel bar away from you because its a bullet bar...

It fits with an inch or two on either side, and suitcases can be put on top of it, I carry the legs in the case, as it was designed. No problem. btw, I have a medium scale (23 1/2, I believe) guitar. A long scale instrument will most likely not fit. The single 8, better known as a "Deluxe Eight", fits easily.
