One of the bands I play with is an eight piece rock band that is LOUD!. I don't like the sound I'm getting playing a pedal steel thru a Nashville 400 at high volume. I am going back to my Blackface Twin and would like to know what would be the best new 12 inch speakers that wouldn't distort.

Telonics...

I have a pair of 12", 8 ohm Telonics in a reissue twin. They can handle anything the amp can put out.

They sound similar to JDL's.

JBL K120's will give you the greatest volume per watt, and do it with clarity and wide frequency response. There's a reason so many Twin Reverbs are loaded with JBL's you know...

Of course, if you push the Twin hard enough, the
preamp is gonna overdrive to a certain extent as well.
Another +vote for Telonics though. Love their 12"!!!

I like Telonics but JBLs are louder per watt.
There is a loud band I play with sometimes and it is really no fun with steel guitar.
Not recommended trying to accommodate super high volume... I use a Stewart World 1.2

Yeah, but it's a lot safer pumping a few hundred watts (or more)
into the Telonics.

If the question is for speakers that will not distort.
It is more of a question of watts.
If you crank up a Twin or Session 400 to 9 or 10 it will distort no matter what speakers are in it.
Stewart World 1.2 in bridged mono 4 ohms is like a 1000 watts.
Bring ear plugs.

Hello All;
I just wanted to add some specs in here about the new Telonics 12" speaker.
Dave worked with Eminence speaker company a loooooong time to get this new Telonics 12" speaker. I know as I bugged him for probably 3+ years about it.
Dave also loves the JBL K series speakers as I do too.
He kept refusing what they sent him until they got as close as they possibly could to the JBL sound + handle a lot more power + weigh a lot less.
Dave does not give up once he starts on a task with a goal in his mind. I would call or email him frequently to ask him how it was coming & he would say " well Ron,
they are getting better but we are not there yet."
I will say he never gave up - he was determined to come up with a replacement for the JBL K series as they are well over 30 years old & one day they will let go on you - I know from experience!
He even has an engineer that can completely rebuild your JBL K series speakers but sadly today it is just not very cost effective.
But if that is what you want, he can take care of that for you + his rebuld will include re-magging you speaker magnet -
the magnet will degrade over time.

Back to the new Telonic Neo 12" speaker.
If you know Dave he REALLY tests all of his gear to the limits & this speaker is no exception.
When he told me he had one ready for me to try I asked him how it would hold up to hi power amps.
His answer was that the 300 watts per speaker is a conservative rating.
So when you run 2 of these in a Fender Twin reverb you can crank it up & you will not have a problem.
Now I don't mean play it for a week straight with the volume on 12 but it is tough.
Also, I will mention the Telonics guarantee - you have that on everything Telonics sells.
Dave stands behind all of his products 200%.

Here are the spec on the Telonics 12" speaker:
Telonics is pleased to announce the release of the model TSNEO 12-8 driver/speaker, it will now be supplied as standard equipment in all Telonics equipment which requires a 12", 8 ohm driver.
It is designed as a modern replacement for the great classic JBL K120-8 speaker.
In broad terms, it handles twice the power while weighing only half as much and produces “that” great sound.

While it does the same great job in steel guitar applications, the TSNEO 12-8 is specifically designed to replace the heavy JBL’s.

ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Resonant Frequency: (fs) 50 Hz.
Power Handling Capability: 300 watts
Measured Sensitivity: 100 db SPL 1W-1m
Impedance: 8 Ohms

MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Overall Diameter: 12.38” (31.45 cm)
Overall Depth: 5.63” (14.30 cm)
Net Weight: 7.2lbs (3.27kgs.)

MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTION

Coil Construction: Copper
Magnet Composition: Neodymium

Here are the JBL K-120 specs:
The K120's sensitivity was rated at 101db @ 1 metre with 1 watt input.

I don't know about you but I cannot hear 1db difference in sound myself.
Here is the 1 thing to remember that Dave has said:
"In broad terms, it handles twice the power while weighing only half as much and produces “that” great sound."

Now I will say this from my experience with the Telonics Neo speakers - your opinion may vary some & thats OK but here is my take.
I did have to tweak my amp controls a touch to dial it in as close as possible to a JBL sound.
Some folks do not like the high tone of a JBL speaker & that is where adjusting your bass/treble & presence controls on your amp comes in.
You can dial in the JBL sound, the Peavy Black Widow sound or anything in between. It is hard to beat that combination IMHO.

Also as Jay Ganz said above:
" Yeah, but it's a lot safer pumping a few hundred watts (or more)into the Telonics."

1 more thing & I will get off the soap box now -
there are other speakers made to emulate the JBL sound but none of them are made to the rigorous
standards of the Telonics Neo speakers.
just wanted to get some facts out there that some folks do not know about ...
Thanks for the time & sorry I got long winded here.
Ron

I should clarify I am not saying I don't recommend Telonics.
My intention was not recommending playing that loud.
When I got my Telonics Speakers and Cabinets I sold my JBLs.
Thanks Ron
