That's such a great performance. Richard Burton did a nice job tabbing that particular one here... http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=144598&highlight=

Thank You Richard!

I've backed a lot of different singers on that song and all, except one, did it in D or D/E.

I agree with Jack. In the past, the artists that I've played for, sang it in either D or D/E. Also, that's the same key whenever I play it as an instrumental. Yes, Richard Burton has some really good tabs!

Johnny Bush's version, with Day on steel, is in F modulating to G.

While I believe that Gene Watson owns this song (figuratively speaking) and while Lloyd's version kills me and while Johnny Bush's rendition is not up to those standards for me, Jimmy Day, on the Bush recording, grabs my heart, rips it out and mops the floor with it.
No matter how many times I listen to it my hair stands up.

I have only played it behind a few singers that had the guts to try to sing it. All of them, but 1, played it in D. The 1 exception was a singer that did it in E.

Often overlooked is the fact that James Cecil Dickens had one of the the first cuts on this, in G# around 1961. Stand up and take a bow, Cece. Oh, you are standing up.

Another version by Joe Nichols with Terry Crisp on PSG. Gene Watson's is still my favorite version.

Thank you, Mr. Sharp. I didn't know that. Mr. Dickens did a great job with it. Here is a link to the audio on YouTube for those who, like me, may not have heard this nice version.

I always play it in D and mod to E except when my friend sings it,
then it's just in D. Because he can't get the high notes in E. Laughing

Gene Watson's version by far is still my favorite with Lloyd on steel. Gene does it now in E to F I believe. Herbie Wallace also had a great instrumental version.

Paul Norman is correct, Gene sang it in E with the mod. to F# at the end of Lloyd's solo. I was there when it was cut in one take with less than 10 mins. left on the session clock. But when we played it live Gene sang it in E to F as 4 to 5 one nighters a week back then would work over just about anyone's voice. The 1/2 tone mod. was just a little easier on Gene, not that he would ever have to worry about hitting that last note.

Just for the record, it was Bush's version with Jimmie Day that he was diggin' prior to the session in which he cut it himself. The choice of cutting that song was made as an afterthought in that last 10 minutes.

Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" O.

This is the stuff that I love. Very Happy Very Happy

The night Tiny and I met, my band had opened for Gene at the Silver Dollar in Austin TX. Also in Gene's band was my old LA picker pal Tony Booth, his bro Larry Booth, one of the Kastner brothers from the old Palomino Club band. This was a great band and Gene and them totally killed it!

I have heard Gene Watson's story of how they cut the song in 10 minutes on the first take. I have heard Loyd Green's side on an interview also. I have the recording of Farewell Party by Gene Watson on CD and it is kicks off in E at the end of the ride Loyd hits one lick of C#,to B to F#. A band I played in kicked it off in G, I took the ride, at the end of the ride. Pick 4,5and 6 at 3rd fret slide up to 7th fret shoving A&B pedals down as you slide the bar. One lick of E, keep pedals A&B down, slide back to the 5th fret, D, Pick 4th and 5th strings and release pedals. That is a beautiful lick as long as the band goes with you. If not &$%#&!@.

Hey Herb:
I remember that night well. You sounded great too and we sure had a good time. I speak to Tony and Larry and the Booth Brothers are both well. I hope you are also.

As for me, I'm out of commission for a few months... destroyed my right shoulder / rotator cuff while cleaning out a boat launch of debris so I could launch the bass boat. The worst part is that I never was able to get on the water that day and it ended the fishing this year for me right at the fall primetime !! No music for awhile either. What a drag. Surgery is set for 10/30. You stay well pal.

Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" O.
