Recently, I was asked to record one of my original tunes for an upcoming Jeff Beck tribute and I am elated. This was a song I had written and posted a rough demo of a few years ago, and somehow it got into the ears of record exec.

This is now the final take. I will have to take it down after a day or two. This one is close to my heart and I am pretty happy with the way it has turned out.

I should add that I played my Clinesmith tuned to C6 (no picks!), and that my buddy, Matt King, played keys and I played double bass and handled the drum stuff.

I'm posting what is the final mix--whatever is done after this point won't be by me. Can't wait to hear it mastered.

Mahavishnu on a steel? Dang, missed it. Between that and Chris Comb's take on Beethoven's 6th.... well at least other people are doing what I haven't. Dave Ristram did a great version of "Cause we've Ended as Lovers" on his "Crisis at the Theme Park."

I like it a lot Mike. I definitely hear a Holdsworth-ian influence in the solo section. Great tune!

Allan's probably my greatest musical influence, though I've never actively (or should I say successfully) channeled him, but it's in there somewhere. Funny, though, because at this very moment I'm working on a Holdsworth-inspired piece (really gonna need my Clinesmith D-10 for this one!).

I'm hoping to muster up the strength to record a CD of my own compositions dedicated to all my favorite guitarists. I've been planning it for a few years, but it seems more likely now.

This is kind of my coming out party. It feels like it's taken forever to get to this point, but I'm glad I stuck with it.

Mike, I've been a Jeff Beck fan since the mid 1970's and during the very short time I've been a member of this forum I've come to enjoy your work. But when I saw this post I have to admit I was skeptical. Beck on a steel?

I flat out admire what you did in this piece. You should be truly proud of this one. You captured the spirit of the mans art and showed real class in your arrangement. Much like Beck's work, every time I listen to it I hear another nuance.

Now can you play Cause We've Ended As Lovers on the Dulcimer.

Not to take anything from Clapton, who distilled all his influences into a potent stew and whose expressive power is undeniable, but for years, it's seemed like Clapton's gotten all the acclaim while Beck has been not exactly under the radar, but somewhat in Clapton's critical shadow. This is a shame because he's really untouchable at what he does - the most unique and original rock guitarist playing today IMHO. The subtle nuances of his whammy bar control are truly astounding.

Great cut Mike. I have to say, I wasn't hearing Beck so much in the head then the hairs on the back of my neck stood up at the solo! You've channeled his energy and trademark phrasing including the whammy bar effects, low register chord stabs and tapping effects all combined with that patented Neer finesse. Great performance, Mike. I'll buy that new CD of yours!

Sorry for playing this game of putting the file up and then taking it down. I've sent the final mix to the producer, so I have to remove it again. This will be available in January or February, and frankly, I can't wait to hear it after it's mastered, and also to see who else is on the project.
