There is a fellow from Alabama, where I'm from, that probably had more to do with my Nashville career than anyone else on the face of this earth. His name is Peck Rowell. He and my Dad were good friends. In the mid 70's he hired me to play at his huge Square Dance Hall. When the Nashville acts didn't have their own band we would back them up. One of the acts was Mel Street. Later when Mel put his own band together, he called Peck and his son Ernie, and that's how it all started for me.

Some of you may know Ernie. He has been in Nashville for a long time and is a great songwriter, singer and musician. Peck, who is almost 90 years old, has written an autobiography with Ernie's help. Peck’s book release party and concert takes place Labor Day weekend and I’m honored to be a part of his special event.

I hate to miss the convention this year. Not only because I enjoyed it so much last year, but two of my favorites folks are going into the Hall Of Fame. One of which is Tommy White. Not only is he such an incredible player, but he has been my dear friend since 1976. Lynn Owsley is an Alabama guy himself. He played with my Dad and with Peck too. He has always been so supportive over the years. I love both those guys and I am so happy that they will be the newest members of The Steel Guitar Hall of Fame.

I’ll miss being there because I know it will be a great weekend.

We'll miss seeing and hearing you there. I guess we'll just have to make a run up to catch 45 RPM.

Hopefully Mike will be obliged to be in St. Louis next year for his own Hall Of Fame induction ceremony!
