At a gig saturday night.. I was bringing the body of my Fender pedal steel through the door,
[ without the case] legs and pedal rack were still in the car..
As I am dragging that heavyass monstrosity through the door, that exactly what I heard some guy say to his friends, or girlfriend...
A Xylophone... Now, I have heard my steel called an Autoharp, String Table, Keyboard[a million times], slide,Hawaiian guitar,Zither, bedsprings, stand up guitar, etc... NEVER had someone call it a Xylo... I dunno, sometimes I get annoyed at this sort of thing, but I suppose thats unfair.. but really now,,, a Xylophone??.....
Later on a pretty young lady was intrigued by it, as she played piano and understood music pretty well. She had never seen one, wanted to know how it worked, and I gave her the grand tour.. Showed her how the pitch of the strings changed by string tension, showed her how intuitive it really was by going I IV V on the same fret, with attendant relative minors etc...
So in one gig within an hour I ran into a borderline blockhead that was obviously pretty clueless, and a musician that was interested in learning about what make a pedal steel tick.
Just found it interesting.
..... Xylophone....
brother..

Even as a young child I knew the PSG wasn't a Xylophone.
My dad's first PSG was a Fender and he kept saying over and over he wished it was a Xylophone |

Xylophone... that's a new one on me. One time two young drunks were checking out my PSG after a gig and one told me he really liked my Keyboard. The other one laughed and said "you idiot, that's a Synthesizer!" And he was serious. I've also heard it called a String Guitar, a Slide, and even an Iron Guitar! |
Iron guitar,, thats not bad... I can accept that
btw, that old Fender feels like an iron guitar.. Its an s 10 but its as heavy as most old school d 10s.. Really ridiculous..
Lugging a D10 Fender 2000??. I can't even imagine.... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Which is which, Bob?
The best one I ever heard was, when I was in High School or just out, I was playing a private party for high school friends, and a friend's beautiful girlfriend came up and said she really liked my "organ". I was never the same after that. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . wow.. maybe that guy wasn't such a bone head after all.. That little xylo on the keyboard stand does look like a short steel guitar body, doesn't it??.. _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

If all the steel builders got together Imagine a peddle Xylo? E-9th probably
Might just have something here and it won't sound like a Bango. I know b0b I have way too much time on my hands. |

I got "Table Steel" on Saturday night. That was from one of the sit-in singers cueing me for a break. Certainly no xylophone, or some of the other funny ones, but first time I had heard that iteration. _________________ Some gear. |
