I want to convert either my BF Bandmaster or my Bassman head to a 1x15" combo for medium volume gigs on PSG and Lead, when my Deluxe Reverb isn't enough power and my Twin would be too big (& too heavy!)

The Bandmaster would seem the obvious choice, but the Bassman might have more available RMS power due to the bigger transformers. It would require converting the "bass" channel tone stack to a normal tone stack, and I am not sure what I would do with the extra tube stage. Would the extra headroom the Bassman could provide be worth it?

I could also swap the output transformers between the heads and continue using the Bassman for crunchy guitar as I do currently.

Opinions?

I did exactly this with a '65 Bandmaster. I put it in a 1x15 cabinet with an EPS15 C speaker. I replaced the output transformer with a Classic Tone Bassman type from Triode Electronics. Turned out great. I use a Boss EQ pedal so have not felt the need to change the tone stack.

Nice looking amp. I can't quite tell from the pic if that is tweed or blonde tolex.

The tone stack mod comment applies to the Bassman, not the Bandmaster.

I bought a rebuilt '66/'68/'13 Bassman that Ken Fox put together. Best amp I've ever owned. I use it with a single 12" Jensen Neo for both pedal, non pedal, and 6 string. I prefer the tone of bassmans to band masters for steel. The headroom in the iron makes a difference IMO.

Popular mod in the 6-string world:

Take a Bandmaster (or Bandmaster Reverb, preferably), install a replacement BF Bassman Ot (for more iron and tighter low end), stick it in a 1x15 cabinet - "Vibroclone", i.e. copy of a 1x15 '64 Vibroverb.

I have a real Vibroverb and it's a kick-a$$ steel amp.

The advantage to the Reverb model is it has an extra gain stage the vanilla "bandmaster" lacks, and it's a slightly weak amp even in reverb configuration - hence the transformer switch.

I did the transformer swap on a '68 Pro Reverb (now owned by Kirk Fletcher) and it not only required no extra holes for mounting, it just jumps off the floor.
