Sorry I should have said when I had two,Carters one 1995 no BCT and a 2009 with BCT ,and the 1995 has to my old ears a better tone and sustain than the 2009 Carter I do not have the 2009 anymore.
I do have the 1995 steel at the moment and its a beauty..

Maybe its because the 1995 has a wooden cabinet on the top front and back aprons and my 2009 has wood only on the top and front please don't get me wrong they both sound superb.

What is your opinion on the earlier and later Carters?

Jimmy..

I am assuming you mean one is a lacquer finish and the other is mica covered. Some lean more to the sound of a lacquer finished guitar over mica, and vice versa.

while later ones had a metal rear apron. John told me this was done because opening the cabinet for repairs or modifications was too much work and trouble so the removable metal back apron came into being.

The two best Carters I have ever owned were 1998 pre-BCT - a D-10 that I sold and an S-12 that I still use. I don't know why I but I think they play and sound better then the newer BCT models.

The 95 looks just like the one I had awhile back, except when I traded it the pickups weren't George L's. It was a great guitar...wish I had kept it.

Yes indeed. Mine does. I didn't know they ever used wood for the back apron. My bad.

I forgot to say I've owned at least a dozen of them so I have had some to compare and now recall a dark red pre BCT SD-10 that was exceptionally good (sold it to a friend).

I've had both pre and post BCT Carters and I too preferred the tone of the pre BCT. I've also had GFI's that were early model Pre Ultra and a few Ultra's. No comparison at all in tone! The Early models have a MUCH better tone and sustain. I still have the 8th pro model GFI made but foolishly sold the 2nd one they made. Won't make that mistake again! Mr. Green

I have to agree. The best sounding. I know tone is subjective. The best sustaining. Not subjective, That I've played is a 95 model. Perhaps because Bud Carter did most if not all the critical work in the very early days? Just guessing.

I have a 5 or 6 year old Carter U-12 that had a George L PU mica cabinet that I am putting an Alumatone in. I never played a non BCT Carter so I can't comment but my Carter has a nice sound and hopefully will sound nicer with the new PU.
