Love the playing on that one, just tolerate the dumb-@$$ lyrics. 
There's another one out there with Lindley and the guy from 90s era Sat Night Live (I'll remember his name later) that's equally good. |

Takes all kinds. One of my favorite Warren Zevon songs - and I love the lyrics: dark, dirty, brutal...not that I relish that imagery, lol, but rather appreciate the honesty. It's all done so right, from the rolling drums to Lindley's seething steel.

| I don't mind, dark, sad, ironic or even bitingly sarcastic songs. Humans have many moods. I just don't personally care for the mashup of transcendent beauty with ugly reality in the same song. |

Yeah, I love the lyrics. Of course, on the original recording the music suits the lyric better. On the live version Andy posted, DL is being ironic (I hope). Here's the original:

Andy, Mike - I agree, actually. I didn't know the link wasn't to the original song and didn't listen until after my post. Zevon's production fits the lyrics and Lindley's steel. This acoustic version and Lindley's beautiful playing is not the most ideal complement.

You're probably right about the irony, mike. That's Lindley's sense of humor to a tee. In this live version of Runaway he plays all kinds of subtle but humorous steel shtick including exaggerating the emotion for comedic effect.
