I like to have a control volume on any electric steel I play. Sometimes the fun of taking out a small lap steel out for jamming with acoustic guitars is not worrying about taking out clunkier "extras", like a volume pedal which is almost as big as the steel and might even be heavier. (in these really small acoustic jams I use a Roland Mobile for amplification)

I was wondering if anyone found or devised something to work the volume at the arm level.

Like maybe a big wooden "knob" that would fit over an existing smaller volume know so it would be easier to control - provided the player can adapt to it being there and "in the way". Or maybe an external control mounted by the input jack?

Before I go crazy trying to make something like this, I was wondering if anyone has had any success doing something like this or might have seen something like this.

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to achieve. Is it volume swells and the like? That could be accomplished with the volume knob on your lap steel, assuming it has one. I don't see how having a volume control at the cable jack would allow you to simulate a volume pedal since you'd need to take your picking hand off the strings to manipulate it.

I agree with Bill on this but it all depends on the location of the volume knob as if positioned close enough, you can just use your pinky finger to wrap around the knob and do the swells while you're playing...lots of guys do that very effectively after a little practice...
