Hello everyone! I am new to the forum and to the pedal steel. I've played guitar for many years and just recently bought a used Carter Starter. Things were going well untill I decided to change the strings. After tuning back up to pitch (e9) I discovered my B pedal had changed. It used to raise both my A flat strings to A. Now the lower one or sixth string
Is raised a whole tone to A sharp! I am at a loss as to why. The linkage seems the same
But clearly something changed! If anyone can help me with this I would be very greatful.
Thanks |

The Starters were set up from the factory to take a .022 wound 6th string. Make sure you're not using a .020 plain. Hope that helps. Jody |

The original Starter 6th string was a wound one. If you replaced it with a plain, unwrapped one, your action will have changed. Best to stay with the mfg.'s wound string on that guitar. [Sorry Jody, guess we had concurrent post times.]

You changed from a wound string to a plain string. No can do without significant adjustment. I don't know much of anything about Carter-Starter adjustments (you need to back off the 6th string's nylon tuner a lot) but the proper fix is to get a wound 6th string and only use Carter Starter string sets in the future. |

Carter Starters take a wound 22 for the sixth string. I'll bet your string set had an unwound sixth. There are string sets made specifically for the Carter Starter. SIT has them in stainless or nickel. |

BTW, the wound sounds better, too _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |
