New Sierra

Just received a Sierra 8 string from a forum member. Other than a few minutes with HowardR's Sierra years ago at the Reece workshop he hosted, I've never played one but was always curious.

Man, is this this deceptively heavy. I couldn't believe the heft when I pulled it out. The sound is unique, so much so when I first tried to tune up the strings that were on it, I wasn't sure I liked it. But after changing out all the strings and putting my usual tuning on it, I started to enjoy the sound more.

The revelation though is how playable it is. It just has a solid well articulated sound. It is a pleasure to play.

But I need a stand, that is for sure.

I believe Sierra sells the fittings and legs (3) to attach to the guitar. Check Sierra's website.

Yes, the Sierra is extremely heavy. I used to have one without legs, and as I said in another thread, it was like having a cement block on my lap! So now I have one with legs. I think the body is made of some sort of compressed wood/plastic composite, possibly pakkawood.

Also, the Sierra has a solid plate of aluminum (I believe it is aluminum) sandwiched between the wood top and bottom. The metal plate is the anchor for the tuning keys, nut and strings on the pickup end. Great tonal quality.

Bill, depending upon your height you might be able to use a folding keyboard stand. I have one for my Sierra. I wrapped some rubber around the top two pieces of pipe that the guitar lays on to keep it from scaring the guitar. You also might contact Sierra and see if they would retrofit it with the factory mounted legs.

Thanks oj.

I've actually contacted Mark Roeder about getting one of his custom stands. Sitting on a keyboard stand at the moment though.

More on this guitar later, but I've really fallen for it and better, my girlfriend of the last year with little exposure to steel guitar other than the ones she has heard me play, says it is her favorite sounding steel she has heard.

The Sierra 8. It practically plays itself!
