Tony,
I have a friend who has a black D10 Sho-Bud. I don't remember the model, but it looks like it was made in the mid to late 70's. It appears to have a black paint instead of a black stain. I'm not sure, but I think it's the factory finish. To make a guitar natural, I would think it would be easier to remove paint than to remove stain. If I'm not mistaken, stain sinks deeper into the wood thus making it harder to remove. Good luck with your project!
Mitch
P.S. I just proof-read my post and it's obvious that I'm not real sure of anything I said! You had better get a second opinion. |

Tony, I'm certainly not the expert here but I have refinished a few Sho-Buds with black paint, or speckle paint. The problem is usually not so much getting the finish off, usually a good paint stripper will work. It usually comes down to what it's covering up which is usually the fact that the wood was fairly rough underneath. Check the surface first before you start. Usually it can be sanded out fairly easily, sometimes you must use a belt Sander first, but in any case the wood is usually beautiful when you're done.
Original speckle paint
Refinished natural
This one has the black stain
This one is refinished natural, was black originally.
The principal is the same no matter what the finish was originally, just strip off the old finish and sand, then lacquer. Hope this helps. |
