I have googled this question and can find some sites talking a little about the subject, but I think it would be a great book to have. Pictures of early steels, the development of the pedal steel, pictures of well known players, etc. I know it would probably target a small audience and wouldnt be a book most publishers would jump at the chance to do, but for those of us "steel nuts" Smile, we would probably read it over and over. There are alot of knowledgeable folks in this area who could sure contribute a great deal to such a book. Just rambling and wishing Smile

Much of the early history of the steel guitar is covered in a book by Lorene Ruymar, titled "The Hawaiian Steel Guitar ..." Although this book mainly concentrates on Hawaiian Steel, there are piuctures of some significant pedal guitars, including several of the very first pedal guitsr, the one that was built by Jay Harlin. A lot of research went into this book, and it shows. Pictures (well over 100) and descriptions of guitars, as well as many tunings and other stuff should make it required reading for anyone interested in the history of the instrument.

Yes, I came across a copy this book @ Moe's book store in Berkeley. As mentioned, lots of pictures, lots of player profiles, the foreward written by Jerry Byrd, etc. I highly recommend it. I don't see it at b0b's store, I do see it at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Hawaiian-Steel-Guitar-Great-Musicians/dp/1574240218/
