Can you recommend a few Hawaiian tunes that I could learn for a new trio some guys and I are putting together? Steel, bass, and drums . . . and maybe add a guitar later.
We'll be doing swing jazz, blues, and some Western swing and would like to add the island sound.
Is Aloha Oe too corny?

First there are two questions.
1: What mood/tempo?
2: Does the repertoire have to be composed in Hawaii?
The Hawaiian War Chant is a good up tempo tune for a swing band.
Waikiki by Andy Cummings is a good slow smooching number.
Aloha Oe used to be instantly recognizable to the audience. Today, most of em wouldn't know it from a bar of soap. I think its ok to use, but if I were in your situation, I would limit it to a close out, goodnight, maybe once through. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. We just discussed this same topic here.
What tuning(s) will you be using? _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Unfortunately for that other thread, the question was asked in a weird sort of way, and the discussion went off on several tangents. Better to start over. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Chris, I think you may find interesting anything Sol Ho'opi'i recorded. Lots of material there that works well in swing. |

Assuming you want songs that are more or less associated with steel guitar in the "hapa haole" genre, try some of my friend Erich Sylvester's selections.
Disclaimer: I play on a couple of the songs.
I'd recommend visiting Mele.com for many other options. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Take a pop tune everyone in your audience would recognize and "Hawaiianize" it. Try a Lady Gaga or Fun tune. Your audience won't likely recognize a true Hapa Haole / Hawaiian tune. (No, I'm not cynical.) |

Matt's got an excellent idea. "Family Guy" theme song has worked well for me as an instrumental. |

I would support anyone who wanted to Hawaiianize anything except pizza. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Thanks for the good suggestions, and apologies for not Searching before I posted.
Andy, Brad, Jeff, and Mike, good ideas. Thanks. I also popped over to the other thread to peel off some ideas.
I am playing pedal steel, but I promise not to rock the A and B pedals! Figure I can hold the E to D# lever, as well as use D# to C# lever, both to get a 6th in there.
Cheers, Chris |

I vote for Hawaiian War Chant, with vocals
But seriously ,whatever you play, play it Hawaiian style.Play the song the way it was meant to be played.Too many people put that Bossa Nova beat or whatever. _________________ I wanna go back to my little grass shack........ |
