Just listened to this insane rant by Michelle Shocked at Yoshi's in San Francisco. It was the first stop on her tour. Second Set. 20 minutes later everyone in the audience had fled, the management shut her down, every gig on her tour was cancelled, and she ends up begging for dollars in a hat because she knows management isn't going to pay her.
I don't think I've ever seen a performer destroy themselves this quickly since Michael Richards was caught giving his rant.
It is a quite the performance: http://entertainment.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/21/17399491-michelle-shocked-apologizes-says-anti-gay-statements-were-misunderstood?lite

She should have checked with the Dixie Chicks first. |

They never learn, do they?
Singers, when on stage, should either sing...or keep their mouths shut. |

I confirmed that information with people who have toured with her. _________________ Bob |

I figure I may have been among the last few folks to have seen her while she still had a career (unless the "being ironic" defense gains traction.)
My usual haunt on Saturday nights (actually an extended dinner break from work next door at the Big Eye TV network) is the Los Angeles Farmer's Market/EB's Bar Ranch Party (where I've seen numerous SoCal Forumites playing). On the Saturday night before the infamous outburst, Pete Anderson (!) headlined and brought up Michelle Shocked for a few numbers. I have to say--a lot of energy and an impressive performance.
Whatever the source of that onstage intensity may be, still there wasn't much to indicate the controversy that would transpire 24 hours later and 300-some miles north. _________________ "Gopher, Everett?" |

Pretty strange... I've done a couple tours with her and played on a few of her albums, and she's always been totally cool and normal with me. I've got to say she's really come into her own as a performer in recent years, and I have alot of respect for her.
But...she's certainly not afraid to speak her mind, both on and off the stage, and that's where more than a few artists shoot themselves in the foot.
Don't really know what to make of this nonsense, though... |

Listen from 4.40 on (it's a long listen, but, um, quite gripping): https://soundcloud.com/therealtofuandwhiskey
At 6.29 she makes it pretty clear that she means what she's saying, despite the retraction she's since proffered.
All very odd indeed. |

Yeah, it is very clear she meant what she said. Too bad for her that that there was a recording. Sort of makes it hard to deny. |
