A local Producer is coming to ME , bringing a 2 track file, I'll load it into Pro Tools and we will record a Steel Track using my small studio ! I am calling this a "P" session, Producer comes to me...I mean why not, he'll take back with him a stereo/mono dry Steel track (whatever he prefers) and he can dump it into his session , wherever that may be ! No travel, not setup...just play in tune and pray my Pro Tools PC doesn't crash...plus I get paid.... Typically I would go to some studio or do an E session..but I kinda like this stay at home, have them come to me concept !

Tony,

It doesn't get any better than that. Our last batch of demo's were done this way. The guitar player was very busy with grad school so I sent her mp3's of the rhythm tracks and she did her parts and sent them back to me.

Super easy and a great way to do it.

Have fun.

You are a great player so it should be great.

Hey Mark thanks..it will be fun..I have done many E Sessions, gone to many studio's, dragged all the gear around..this is totally different, NEW for me.....they are coming to me..I love it ! What a novel concept !.. I actually suggested it as our schedules were in conflict...he loved the idea...me too! He's coming to see me in-between appointments. Didn't have to book any studio time, didn't have to adhere to a specific studio schedule.. etc...we worked it out...plus it will be good to hang out and relax a bit without a clock ticking...

Actually the Producer who is coming over, I have worked for him on several projects...

It's a "P" session....Producer comes to me !

Well it went fine but.

A Producer who is not paying for studio time can take his time, the session went about an hour and a half longer than discussed...not because of the track recording but rather at the end, he wanted to go back and get extra parts that he may or may not use... I don't think he was taking advantage, more like we're both here, lets add some more stuff...

For the future, I'll treat these types of sessions as a time block, rate per time ....just like a studio would charge. There will be an end time, unless of course I am not covering the track as expected, that would be on me...

It was good experience, my system performed fine... oh, the agreed rate pretty much covered the entire time so it wasn't like I was working for $1 an hour...

I think having a home studio is the way to go and has been that way for me for 10 years. The only problem I see with sending mp3 files is the bit content of the mp3 file. It is been cut so low in bit count you lose so much of the music content. But then if the mp3 file works for you that's great. I own my own home recording studio and there is such a huge difference between, record to tape, record to 24 bit, and record to mp3 file which is the worst of the 3 I just mentioned for quality sound. Try to stay in a format which is 16 to 24 bit if you are recording to digital. You would be suprised on how much better your sound wll be.

When uploading tracks for people to overdubs on, it is a lot quicker to send a MP3 upload...overdubs are recorded 24 bit and sent back...

I tracked steel for a New Zealand studio about 2 years ago. I exported the track from Sonar as 14/44.1Khz wav file. I uploaded it to my web site and let them download the file. That kept the fidelity.

However, I've also used MP3's and when I do, I use 192Kb/sec MP3's. I've seen posts on recording forums of people using 320Kb/Sec MP3's for even better MP3 fidelity.

sure there are quality differences..clients send me MP3's, I send them back, via my FTP account..., wav files, dry, 24 or 16 whichever they prefer...

But all of this still does not come close to or replace working in a fine studio with a quality engineer and/or producer !

I enjoy the interaction with a producer/engineer and the suggestions they make...

Don't underestimate what many home studio's have. My friend (and forumite) Blake Hawkins who has designed commercial audio recording studios is amazed at the equipment and software I have and what it can do. He says 20 years ago it would have taken a half million dollar studio to do what I can do with about $2K of hardware and software.

What Jacks says is very true with regard to gear/software.

A $299 Zoom R16 is probably the equivalent of a $25,000 or $30,000 analog studio from the 70's ! The drawback to home studio's is not the gear but rather the performance and isolation rooms...

Tony,

Totally agree with you on your last post; espcially the performance.

However, I use tight micing when the band is here and the drummer is in my wife's office. We get a pretty good drum sound and I try to take the room out of it. Of course if I had her office acoustically treated hmmmmm!!

Not holding my breath on that one.

I do pretty well with my meager little setup, I mic as well, The only thing I would like to get now is a small mixer to go into my interface
