Topic: Need instructions MSA pickup change |

I have a mid-70's MSA S-10 Classic that I'd like to swap the pickup just to see how I like the sound. I'm relatively new to these instruments and could use some basic instruction/advice on best way to disassemble and install a the new pickup. I have very good guitar set-up and electronics skills.

Put up a picture of the pickup gray. I've had two and they've had two different trays and attachment methods

I can't see the pickup tray or how the pickup mounts.

That's an early model and a narrow pick up. If I were you I'd leave it alone or have that one rewound. you will need to rout out the cavity for most replacement pickups. I had an early MSA once and used a Goodrich 60 preamp to make it sound better.

Dave is right, My MSA S-10 SN 1C2921 has a pickup as wide as the bolsters that hold the changer shaft, 1 3/4 inches wide. My guitar pickup has no exposed magnets. It has written in white "MSA SuperSubstain" accross the top of the pickup. My steel had a dull sound through the built in volume and tone control. I put a small 3 pole switch under the guitar on an L shaped plate and I can bypass the volume and tone controls and go direct. Direct gives a much better sound. My MSA D-10, I bought used, Has been wired direct to the Out Jack. I would bypass the controls and try it before I changed the pickup one of the controls may be causing the undesired sound. I used the 4 small holes so I can remove and return to original. Good Luck in finding the sound you desire, Happy Steelin.

I would also check the solder joints on the pickup and the tone and volume May have a bad connection.

| Thanks for the input, all. Actually, I was planning to install a bypass, using a pull-switch volume pot replacement. The biggest complaint I have with the stock MSA pickup is noise. I was hoping to put a Lawrence PU in and see what it does. |

Sometimes pick-up swaps can involve routing and or pick-up customizing / shaving.

| Those pickups are mounted with 2 screws from the underside of the guitar and are quite narrow leaving few choices for replacements. |
