Hi, anyone watch the Africa Channel? I just watch the last 10 min of a show called Soundcheck at Momo's and they had a three piece african/blues band and the lead singer played as best I could tell a one string insturment with a bow and by bending the string with the other hand. It sounded to me like Sugar Cane Harris. The guitar player had a Les Paul gold top and the drumer play different drums. It repeats a Midnight EST. I'll see if I can find video to post. I have watch music shows one this channel before and enjoy them, give it a try.

Dennis,
I've been a big fan of African music for years. In some cases (such as the nyanyeru, or riti, played by Juldeh Camara in the band Juju), I've never seen the instruments, only heard the music, so nice to see videos of them being played.
Africa is not only a rich source of musical traditions that have influence Western music.... It is also a source of instruments, some incorporated into our traditions in modified forms(the banjo, for example), but others still unique to Africa (kora, mbira, etc).
I always like the group Konono No.1 because of the story behind it - they played traditional instruments - percussion and likembe (similar to an mbira), but as their audiences grew, they had to figure out how to play louder. So, the made their own electric instruments and sound system, including "a microphone carved out of wood fitted with a magnet from an automobile alternator and a gigantic horn-shaped amplifier." (wikipedia)
There is a definite heavy-distorted sound to their music, and it is VERY African... probably too much so for some listeners (forget "kindly keep it country"... unless the country is Congo).

For those who want a more mellow, melodic style, here is a nice traditional mbira piece:

Love the bottle-caps to give a little percussive rattle when needed!

Hi Doug, Glad you enjoyed the video. I enjoy all different kinds of music also.
I like the sounds he gets from the riti(didn't know what it was) at times it sounds like a harmonica, bagpipe and fiddle.
