Anyone care to volunteer the width measurement for an 8 string (at the nut)?

I assume it's wider than a 6 sting fretboard/neck but I would like a number to work with....

Anyone?

The outside string to string distance on my Fender 400:

at the nut: 2 3/16" (5/16" o.c.)

at the changer: 2 5/8" (3/8" o.c.)

Nut, fretboard and changer are, of course, slightly wider. HTH.

Any idea why they taper outwards at the bottom? Two of my lap steel fretboards don't taper, and two do. Seems pretty arbitrary.

All my steels are 6 string tho...

Here are some measurements I made on various guitars, middle of string 1 to 8, in mm, nut/bridge.
I think they are accurate to .5 mm

Fender Dual Pro 8 54.5/70
Fender Stringmaster Dual and Triple 8 55.5/66.5
Fender Deluxe 8 55.5/66.5
Allen Melbert 8 56.5/67
Georgeboards 8 60.5/66
Rickenbacker DW16 52/72

They taper because we're stupid, arbitrary, hidebound etc. Except then you get used to the "narrow" pedal steel spacing or the wider "vintage" spacings and you're then sure that that one is RIGHT. Laughing Of course you are, dear...

EXCEL D-8, 59mm-70mm (designed to be vintage-y for the Hawaiian guys, I believe)

The 8-string distances on a 10-string MSA SuperSlide - 56mm - 65mm
This feels very modern PSG-y.

The 8-string distances on the 12-string MSA SuperSlide nut & bridge option - 52mm - 61mm
This feels, quite frankly, ridiculous. To me. Which is why Reece Anderson sounds so... great, playing it? How utterly confusing. Laughing
(This is close to normal electric guitar spacing if you blew up a 6 to an 8, BTW).
