My friend Oscar Calderon was one of the original members of The Aliens, a San Francisco band in the 60s that helped kick-start the Latin rock sound (think Santana). Oscar lives here in Cloverdale, about a mile from me. Lately we've been working on some tunes in my garage studio.

Oscar played guitar and sang these tunes with a drum machine. That's one guitar you hear - there's no bass and no guitar overdubbing. Oscar plays bass and rhythm on his Strat while he sings. He sometimes does solo gigs with his drum machine.

I overdubbed the steel parts on my Sierra lap steel. It's tuned to D6th, with G as the 8th string: G B D F# A B D F#. I used a Line6 POD XT and recorded direct (no amp). The steel effects you hear are in the POD XT.

For the icing on the cake, Oscar brought in his drum set. We recorded it with 4 mics and then deleted the drum machine tracks.

The first 5 songs are now available for listening online or as a $2 download at:

I hope you all like it.

You sound really good, b0b. Nice tone, amp or not. I really like the sound on Unchain My Heart.

I've always loved the phase shifter effect. For the solo, I use the Auto-Wah effect in the POD XT after the volume pedal. It sort of turns the VP into a wah pedal.
