Hello everyone. A new member here. A couple of years ago I was hired to play a alt country gig (been a gtr player for 30 years) and on the rehearsal recording there was some pedal steel on a couple tunes. So, for the heck of it, I picked up one of those new Gretsch lap steels to learn some basic chords to act as background noise (and noise it was, for a while!). Well, as many of you can understand, I've been bitten by the lap steel bug. I do guitar repair at a local music store, so I decided to build myself a steel. I went with a seven string tuned C6/A7. And you know, I haven't had more fun playing an instrument! I've actually picked up other gigs now that people know I can play this darned thing.

To other new players: Be diligent! Lap steel doesn't come easy. You've got to earn it by playing everyday and taking small bites. It helped me to just learn a couple easy tunes to play with a group, gradually getting more confidence as I went along. Don't give up! I know I'm probably stating the obvious, but sometimes it's nice to hear from a fellow beginner.

But the main reason I'm writing this is to thank all the members who I've borrowed construction and playing tips from. This forum is such a wealth of information. And I look forward to reading the forum everyday.

Regards;

David

Thanks for the compliment Wayne. The body's made out of poplar from Home Depot. 23 inch scale. I did up the fretboard with Office draw program and sent it to a local trophy company who etched it. I like the way it come out. The bridge and nut are just threaded rod that I painted black (an idea I got from one of the forum members). A friend painted it kinda off-white, ala Fender steels. EMG 7-string pickup which turned out really sounding great for lap steel (at least in this lap steel!).

Thanks again for your kind comments.
