I liked Donald Byrd when I first got into jazz but he lost me when he became more commercial. Still, a good if not great jazz player and innovator in his own right.

Donald Byrd wrote my favorite song of all time: "Tanya, the Girl Upstairs." My favorite version is Dexter Gordon's from his 1978 LP "Manhattan Symphonie" (Columbia). "Tanya" and the entire LP is on iTunes - well worth playing the samples. Here's an excerpt of a live version with George Cables on piano who was also on the Columbia date:
