Paul Franklin, Johnny Cox, and the Timejumpers

I happened to be back in my old home-town of Washington DC and was able to catch the Timejumpers on the first show of their first real tour. After all the times seeing them at the Station Inn over the years it was good to see them in my home city, and the audience loved them.

Paul knocked it out of the park over and over, and though I 'm sure the sets will change from night to night (they have a huge repertoire to choose from and never use a set list, just calling 'em on the fly) Vince Gill sang "Together Again" and it was all Paul from start to finish and an incredible display of soul combined with amazing creativity.

They also did "Sweet Memories" and on that and every song she sang Dawn Sears proved again that she belongs on the short list of the very best country singers ever, in my humble opinion. Vince was irreverent and funny as hell, and the whole casual vibe made it easy to forget the incredible virtuosity and sheer musical intelligence that was represented by virtually every member of the band.

On a related note, way back when Monday nights with the Timejumpers was an almost unknown thing and mostly a casual word-of-mouth musician's hangout, my old friend Johnny Cox was the steel player in the band. In those years I was there pretty much every week, and I recently got to hang out and hear Johnny with Redd Volkaert in Austin, and Johnny's still one of the very best; he was stunning. (I had to follow him in the same club the next night and was definitely humbled!)

I have to say that people who complain that there isn't any good music these days just aren't trying very hard!

Totally agree, Pete. I don't understand why she is essentially Nashville's best kept secret. Maybe she wants it that way?

I also had the pleasure of hearing this fantastic show at Va Beach the other night. It was my first time seeing Paul in a live situation and it was incredible to say the least. I am in the process of planning a trip to Austin and am looking forward to seeing Johnny Cox with Redd. I have seen Redd several times in Austin with players like Buzz Evans , Herb Steiner and Cindy Cashdollar and can't wait to see the great Mr. Cox with him. I hope Paul sees this post and I would like to thank him and the rest of the Time Jumpers for taking the time and effort required to put this show on the road. It truely was a pleasure to hear this caliber music so close to home.

Totally agree, Pete. I don't understand why she is essentially Nashville's best kept secret. Maybe she wants it that way?

I just don't think the country world of today can handle someone that is actually that good. She is one of my favorites.
