How many of you anymore still play St.Louis Blues?
We used to play it regularly but I imagine times have changed.

You know, it's not 'matching' JB but it's the incentive to try arising out of the JBFC site is what it's all about, IMHO.
I learned just about everything I know as a result of my listening to JERRY BYRD. By learning his songs, I learned the tuning which made playing in C6th much more easier.
I still learn something new, every time I sit down to the g'tar. Best wishes to you. |

speaking of "Blues", did you ever play "Blues In The Night" ? It's a little harder and not too many singers sing it. It was alsways one of my favorite Blues Songs.

You woke up some old memories Ray. As i have posted before, i started on fiddle when i was 9 or 10 years old long before taking up steel. I still remember the first dance i ever played in in my home town when i was 14 or so. No booze was served there as it was a dry county so i could play. The other fiddle player was a retired rail road worker and taught me a lot.
I believe the reason i remembered this was the first instrumental i played was the St.Louis Blues and no one danced. He later had a fatherly talk to me because i had hopped the tempo up quite a bit.
He told me to always play a song the tempo it was written in,in other words don't jazz up a blues,ect. thats why no one danced he said. I never forgot his advice and when i started playing for a living i was always careful to watch the tempo. I made my living for fifty plus years playin steel and fiddle when i had to.
Think you know what i mean. When i started on steel after a while i was getting good paying jobs playin steel before i hardly knew which side of the steel to sit on and i was getting jobs where they had steel players who could blow me out of town. I didn't realize it at the time but it was because the melody was about all i knew how to play at the time and i was careful to watch the tempo when called on the play an intrumental. I usually got the jobs playing fiddle and wound up on steel.
May or not be something i have said to help the ones starting out now. Tracy |

| Hey Billy & Ray , I remember that one , some of the lyrics as I can recall " My Momma done told me , when I was in kneepants , my Momma done told me , son , a women is two-faced , a worrisome thing that will leave you to sing the "Blues in the night" !! I still play "St. Louis Blues" at some of the local steel shows , using the tone control "Wah wah" to get that bluesy horn sound !! Eddie "C" AKA the olde geezer |

I enjoy recalling the olde tunes I grew up with.
A little off center here but how 'bout:
"Cement Mixer, Putty, putty, putty? and/or,
"5 Salted peanuts", or
"Milk Man, Keep Those Bottles Quiet".

When Barbara Mandell was a young teenager playing on a four neck Wright Guitar, St.Louis Blues was one of her signature tunes she excelled at. We all would run into her when playing on the "Cal's Corral TV show on Suinday afternoon in the "Good Old Days".
