For most of the last year and a half I've been rediscovering my standard guitar playing and lately, getting my butt kicked by online lessons with Martin Taylor (wonderful site and teacher, by the way - check out artistworks.com). I even told myself that I only have so many years left and can only get good at one thing and standard guitar comes way easier to me than steel; I have to fight for every gain. I even contemplated selling all my steels but the steel guitar bug slowly started to creep back into my consciousness.
Today I plugged in my electric steel for the first time in a year and a half. Man, the steel is a cruel mistress! Ouch! In a ten minute minor blues jam there was only one chorus of pull string licks that I liked. I wanna walk away .... but I can't! I got a monkey on my back and it's name is steel guitar. I sound like crap but I can't quit you, baby! Sigh. |

I think I get what you're saying Andy. I get it because I say it myself often. I can't give steel the commitment it demands, but I can't give up on it either. |

I used to feel that way, honestly I did. Almost walked away from it, but I figured it was time to really give it one last effort. What a long, strange trip it's been! _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

My steel playing has been on the back-burner for the last few years. I know it's weird, but I find it almost simple to play swing on the steel compared to standard guitar (and I've played standard guitar for over 30 years!) Course I don't bother with string pulls and I rarely play a reverse slant, so maybe my sights are set a lot lower on steel I have 2 more years to focus on standard guitar playing swing/gypsy jazz before I switch my focus over to steel. _________________ Primitive Utility Steel |
