My 1980's MXR Envelope Filter that I've been using for 40 years is starting to throw craps. I need a simple, no frills, similar to the MXR that I can dial in to a close setting as Emmons used on Witch's Brew. There are several brands with basic controls, but I'm hoping some forum members have some experience input recommendations.

I've built clones of the DOD 440 Envelope Filter and Lovetone Meatball mostly for 6 string in thr chase of the Jerry "Estimated Prophet" tone. I've found that I like a few more controls than the DOD and less than the Lovetone. The new EHX nano Q tron looks promising and it won't break the bank, it's about $100. Of course there is the Micro-tron IV the small form factor modern take on the classic Mutron III, possibly the definitive envelope filter.

On a lark i picked up a Sonic Cake Cry-bot for $25 off ebay. It works really great with steel, the sweep and sensitivity are good and it does not distort with steel. I believe its an OTA based filter which are known for having a smooth quality.

The Proton by Three Leaf Audio is the best I have used and closest in sound to my original Mutron pedals

it tracks steel very well

Tried a bunch and settled on the Analogman because it seemed to respond over a wider range of the fretboard than most of the others, plus having very responsive controls and a wide range of input volume flexibility.. Build time is about a month, though...

As a matter of fact I just ordered the Sonicake yesterday. Cheap enough to take a chance. My interest is not Mutronish synthy sounding stuff. Just old fashioned deep funky wah. On my board at the moment is a Line 6 Otto Filter which is surprisingly cool. When you've got it dialed in just right you can actually play it with your volume pedal. Lots of negatives. It is very input sensitive. Hard to get the input level just right. The output is super hot & peaky. And it is about as comfortable on a pedalboard as a blacksmith's anvil. If I like the Sonicake enough to replace the Otto, I win in a lot of ways. If not, this quirky pedal is nasty and fun.

So far, lots of endorsements. Jon, let me know if is adjustable enough to get that quacky/poinky parameter that Emmons got on Witch's Brew.

I see the bass filter at that price. Is that what you bought?

Howard --2 days ago, this is what I bought. There is (was) a 30% discount at checkout so with free shipping it netted me $28.

Jon's link is the same one I bought off ebay, perhaps they are closing that one out and have a new model/graphics coming.

I am currently using The Keeley Neutrino Envelope Follower/Auto-Wah, and really like it.

https://robertkeeley.com/products/neutrinov2

I have it on my Little "Grab & Go" Board right now, Shelly & kyle will be moving it to my new Main Board as soon as it's built. Here it sits right next to my Hilton Legend Pro-Delay.

Ah.....your day is never complete untill you have the boss Robert Keeley himself yell at you over the phone. Gives ya a warm and fuzzy feelin' all over....ya know.
